This article was very poor. Mainly an advertisement for ICC -- like it really has much to do with soccer in America. Very shallow fluff piece but I agree with the final bottom line: looking up for soccer!
Yeah, the ICC isn't gaining 'credibility' (laughable that the source of evidence of this is an interview with the promoter), so much as the soccer audience is, in general, getting larger. It is true that it was, at one time, pretty easy for Euro friendlies like that to over-saturate the market. If they tried to go back to the same city two years in a row, you could often see a falloff that you don't today. But at that time, MLS attendance was also two-thirds of what it is today, so the rising tide theory seems a lot more appropriate to explain it.
Yowza. Is this a repeated issue for TFC SGs? I’ve seen a few things over the years, but its Canada, so I’m guessing some stuff has been missed by the US soccer media...
The crap they've done at Columbus is what I meant by the few things over the years, but the last one was a number of years ago, wasn't it?
That shit was back ten hears ago. They felt they were God's gift to MLS fandom. A few years of MLS reality smacked them around and stuff like this stopped happening. They reached the point where I was rooting for them to win it all last year. Bygones and all that. But yeah, on one memorable occasion at Crew Stadium they a) dropped trou and dickie waved at a wedding party going on at the church next door, b) tore up an entire section of railing and tossed it off the isecond deck, c) tossed a lit flare onto an awning over the lower picnic deck, burning a hole through it, plus some other stuff which ended up with arrests. But like I said, that was ten years ago. They were in CBus last November and it was a terrific party. Couldn't have been a nicer bunch.
As for Steffen, we're back to the days when "American" translated as "cheap". The kid is easily worth twice that. He could easily equal the best we've had, which is saying a lot, but anyone making a run at him is gonna need to bring cash. I get it that nobody wants to open the vault for a 23 yesr old keeper, but that's not Columbus' problem. Somebody will be willing to belly up to the bar eventually and have their keeper for the next decade. Steffen will backstop the US men for a generation. He's the real deal. Berhalter will let him go for the right price, but this isn't Beansy's Bargain Basement.
You guys, the dumpster fire is finally getting some real news coverage.#Rapids96 #RapidsMemes #MLS pic.twitter.com/Ixqnw7g0EX— Rapids Memes (@RapidsMemes) July 20, 2018
Just one supporter's group who think it's their duty to spread the gospel of being ooooltra to the unbelievers, no matter what the cost. Granted, they bring the noise and all that, but they are also irresponsible when it comes to pyros and such. They piss a lot of people off.
Interesting article on the disappointing World Cup viewership ratings in St. Louis. Still, the Lou was better than Cincinnati and Nashville...two teams that will be in MLS in the next couple of years. The St. Louis numbers were also better than Sacramento's. Also of note, Austin and Miami were both in the top 5.
