Last night I watched the friendly between the Red Bulls and Guadalajara on Spanish TV. They played the match at the U of Az over in Glendale, Arizona. I was surprised to see Big Zack Thornton between the pipes, and more surprised when he finished with a clean sheet. The old Metro Stars came away with a 1-0 win after playing the entire 2nd half down to 10 men, due to what I perceived as a red card given by a "homer" hispanic referee and the little goats still couldn't score a goal. Those guys did more flopping around on the turf, dropping like flies at the slightest bump and then moaning and groaning to the ref like that other fine actor, "el pescadito" who's back again playing with the Galaxy.

Steve Herdsman is playing in a beach soccer tournament today in Grand Haven, MI. His team tied the game 1-1 on a last minute PK in their first game.

    More from Goff:

"Player search update: Dan Gargan remains very much on DCU's radar. Chivas USA has his MLS rights, so the club would have to relinquish perhaps a minor draft pick. Gargan (Georgetown) was a starter in Colorado before he damaged a knee ligament last year. He signed with Chivas, but then left pro soccer for the time being. He's a right back, but can also play on the right flank. San Jose is also pursuing him, but with his D.C. connections and his Philadelphia upbringing, he seems more interested in playing here."

That's bunk ... he ripped the Rapids off ... I'm sure he's committed the crime again!

    Charleston Battery
Aaron King named USL First Division Player of the Week

Charleston, SC. Charleston Battery forward Aaron King has been named the USL First Division Player of the Week following his outstanding performance during last Saturday night's game versus the Montreal Impact. King was substituted into the game in 60th minute; he scored the game winner and also assisted on the third goal as the Battery won 3-1.

Aaron King is joined on the Team of the Week by Battery midfielder Ian Fuller who is also honored for his efforts during the game versus the Impact; Fuller scored Charleston's first goal in the match.

This is King's second season with the Battery; in 2007 he scored 4 goals with 1 assist in 27 games played. A native of Denver, CO, King, 24, was originally drafted by Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy's as a fourth-round pick (48th overall) in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft but switched to Colorado during pre-season.

Prior to turning pro, King was a four-year starter with NC State where he scored 29 goals and had 12 assists. He was named first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference for both the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

i was just watching Fox Soccer Channel and they were showing highlights from everywhere. They showed the highlights from a match between Charleston and Puerto Rico. While he didn't score, Fabrice Noel was a signficant player in the match. In the last 20 minutes, he was fouled in the box and Puerto Rico was awarded a PK, which they made. A little later, he dribbled into the box and dealt the ball off to a teammate, who scored on a tremendous blast leading to a 3-1 victory. Puerto Rico has won 5 out of their last 6.

    Yep

But it wasn't final back then. Seems like a pretty crazy move given his long rumored issues. Maybe it's his way of trying to exercise the demons? Or maybe he heard all the cheerleaders looked like Cleopatra?

Did Clavijo ever lay into Cunningham publicly?

    Carver blasts Cunningham, Wynne

Toronto FC head coach John Carver had to believe his club had found a miracle when a loose ball sat near the goal-line just waiting to be kicked in. Forward Jeff Cunningham was right near the ball but couldn't put it in, which forced TFC to settle for a 1-1 tie against Montreal on Tuesday night. The tie cost Toronto a berth in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

"I'm thinking How has he scored 99 goals?'," Carver said of Cunningham's failure to find the game-winning goal in that late scramble. "That's what I thought. How has he scored 99 goals in this league, because, if you're a poacher and you've got desire, no matter how you put the ball over the line you put the ball over the line."

Carver repeatedly stated TFC's desperate need for help at forward, saying the team needs two new forwards to get out of its current funk.

"When we're having to depend on a 16-year-old boy to be our lead striker I think that tells you everything," said Carver, referring to Abdus Ibrahim, who started as the lone striker in Toronto's 4-5-1.

It has to be an attempt at motivation, instead of being a harsh critic. Carver has already established a history of saying one thing in the press to try to accomplish something completely different elsewhere.

I didn't see this anywhere in the thread, so..

First year coach Bob Houghton is the head coach of the Indian National Team. Might be old news. India is currently hosting a tournement of some of the lesser teams in Asia. Winner gets an automatic spot in the next Asian Championship.
