Tommy Smyth talked about the goal today on the ESPN broadcast, but did not mention that today was the anniversary (at least not in this part, I missed most the rest of it). I've emailed him to see if he knew. http://www.shareonall.com/Tommy_Smyth_on_Razor_bofk_avi.htm
Twenty years on, I still don't think I could sit through it, my nerves were in shreds until the final whistle.
He is an embarrassment. Great day alright. Would have swapped any World Cup to be there for that day. Unfortunately Irish people will still cheer on an english club against their own though without seeing the hypocrisy. Go figure. KOH
Why is that? He was the only even bearable commentator (along with Derek Rae) until this tournament. We had baseball commentator Dave O'Brien for the last WC and that was awful...it was Kerwyne Jones for the whole match
For we youngins who were too young to remember when that happened, this will be the highlight of our Ireland memories until we are back at the WC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq-t-C6izbA&feature=related This goal in particular is something I will probably always remember: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWg9VOjWVr4&feature=related And then there is this sad episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcdnzeoBJT4&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oN-voEwlrko http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR34GDMmLPA&feature=related Alotta good new Irish soccer videos on Youtube lately.
I think it's this goal that I hold in fondest memory, even more than Robbie's against Germany. http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=ePNST9aczFI
I was behind that goal and truely never felt Lansdowne shake, literally shake, as it did when the ball hit the back of the net.
Without doubt that was the best day ever in Lansdowne. We stayed on singing for a good hour after final whistle.
Wouldnt go that far! But if they love their english clubs so much they should move there. Support your own. KOH
Tell you what, why not list the rules and regulations of your book about the where, why and whens of how to support any Irish team, from Killavilla United to the Republic of Ireland senior team. You should include permissible chants, appropriate sportswear, what's allowed to be eaten, whom you can talk to, when to take a leak, how many times you can blink during the first half, what to do if you sneeze too often and which fingernails you're allowed to bite. This list of rules and regulations would be invaluable. With it we might be able to obliterate the scourge of the bar-stoolers who, are we all know well, are single-handedly responsible for the decline of Western civilization and the reason they run out of cod in Burdock's before 9 on a Thursday.
Calm down son. All I am saying is that Ireland is the only country that has fans that refuse to support their own domestic clubs. KOH
