This is the match thread where I will be posting fixtures and results.

DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD. Keep all your discussion on the main thread please. This thread should be kept for me to update things only as it needs to be easy for people to navigate rather than struggle to find the necessary information in an ocean of comments.

    Team Instructions Explanations
    Team Philosophy:
This is the fundamental style of your team, from Very Rigid to Very Fluid. This choice affects three things:
1.How closely the players are positioned. In Very Rigid there is a big gap between the defense, midfield, and attack. In Very Fluid, there is a small gap, similar to Sacchi's AC Milan.
    2. How compartmentalized the team is. In Very Rigid, the defensive players only focus on defending, while the attackers only focus on attacking. In Very Fluid system, everyone is expected to be heavily involved at all phases of the game.
    3. How much freedom players have. In Very Rigid, the players have less creative freedom and are expected to follow the manager's instructions as if they're orders. In Very Fluid, the players have the most amount of creative freedom, and are allowed to express themselves and do what they think is best. The manager's instructions act merely as guidelines.

    Match Strategy:
Match strategy works on a scale between Defensive to Attacking. Match Strategy affects the following things:
    1. Mentality: Defensive strategies will give your team a defensive average mentality where they will take less risk. Attacking strategies give higher mentality which makes the players take more risk in search of a goal.
    2. Tempo: Defensive strategies play slower, attacking strategies play faster.
    3. Passing: Defensive strategies play shorter safer passes, attacking strategies play more direct passes.
    4. Width: Defensive strategies play narrows, attacking strategies play wider.
    5. Defensive Line: Defensive strategies have lower D-line, attacking strategies have higher D-line.
    6. Closing down: Defensive strategies close down less, preferring to hold position, attacking strategies close down more aggressively.

    Tempo
How quickly you want your players to make decisions. It is more than just moving the ball around quickly (although tempo dictates that as well.) It is also making runs. Higher tempo means your players will move around quickly as well. Slower tempo means they will take longer to judge the situation before doing something.

    Width
Pretty self-explanatory this one. How wide your team is.

    Defensive Line
    Also self-explanatory.

    Offside Trap
If you choose Yes for this option, your defenders will employ the offside trap aggressively.

    Pressing
How aggressively you press the opponent with the ball.

    Prevent Short GK distribution
If you choose Yes your attackers will try to mark and pressure the defenders, so your GK can't pass to them and forced into making long passes forward instead.

    Use Tight Marking
If you choose Yes your players will mark their opponents more closely. This comes with its own obvious pros and cons.

    Tackling
This option is on a scale. Light tackling applies less pressure, and less likely to win back the ball. However, players that stand their ground more are less likely to be beaten 1v1, and less likely to get booked. Hard tackling is the opposite where the players will dive into tackles more often in an attempt to win back the ball.

    Build Up:

Where and how you choose to focus your build-up play. There are essentially a combination of two things:
    1. Normal vs Route One
    2. Left, Right, or Center. You can pick Left & Right, but you cannot pick Center with Left or Right.

Or you can just choose a balanced buildup approach.

    Play Out of Defense
Do you want your defenders to maintain possession and play their way out, or hoof the ball clear to safety?

    Passing
Another self-explanatory decision. Keep in mind that Direct doesn't mean route one. Arsenal Invincibles and Klopp's Liverpool would both be Direct teams. It simply means trying to get the ball into the opponent's box as quickly and in few passes as possible. Short passing style is of course tiki-taka where the focus in on keeping possession and trying to find an opening.

    Retain Possession
This is actually a safety option. It means, you want your players to focus on keeping the ball first and foremost. Only going for opportunities that are clear cut, and not to force anything.

    Creative Freedom
How closely do you want your players to follow your exact instructions. More creative freedom means trusting your players to make the correct decisions on their own. Can make them hard to predict by the opponents, but also less predictable for you.

    Additional Attack Options
These are additional instructions you may give to your team, or you can leave it blank.
Look for Overlap: Your wide players will hold onto the ball, waiting for your fullbacks to run in behind them.
Hit Early Crosses: Tells your wide players to cross from the edge of the ball, rather than from the byline.
Work Ball Into Box: Basically, trying to walk the ball into the net. Your players will be less likely to take long shots or cross, preferring to keep moving the ball until they find an opening.

    Crosses
Drill: Hitting the cross hard across the goal. Less accurate, but also more difficult to defend.
Float: High crosses into the box.
Low: Low crosses into the box.

    Dribbling
Do you want your players to dribble more or less?

    Movement
Do you want your players to have the freedom to move around, or do you want them to stick to their positions?

    Players Positions and Roles
    Positions & Formation
Instead of telling me what formation you'll be using, it'll be derived by the positions of the players you give me.

Football Manager positions are a combination of X/Y axis.
On the X axis, there are:

    Left (L)----Center Left (CL)----Center (C)----Center Right (CR)-----Right (R)

On the Y axis, there are:
    1. Defenders (D)
    2. Wingbacks and Defensive Midfielders (WB and DM)
    3. Midfielders (M)
    4. Attacking Midfielders (AM)
    5. Strikers (ST)

The only exceptions is there are no wide STs, and there is the sweeper role (SW) which is alone in its own position.

The way you tell me your players position is with this formula: Y axis + X axis.

So, a left fullback can either play as a DL or WBL. In a double pivot midfield, you'd have one DMCL and one DMCR. In a front three, you might have AML, STC, and AMR. In a midfield three, you might have a DMC, MCL, and MCR.

    Roles
You find out about the players roles here:
    Player Roles Guide

There are essentially three 'duties' a player can have: 'Defend' 'Support' and 'Attack'. Some roles are limited to just one, some can be all three. This affects how the players play their role. So, an Inside-Forward (Support) plays differently to Inside-Forward (Attack).

    Good win @benni...

Interestingly, at 2-1 I thought I will be lucky to onyl lose two to one and then the third goes in at the very end and I thought well I will be lucky to only lose 3-1!

Got some good insight at first blush from the game though. Will try to analyze more next week in prep for the regular season.
