Nice game on Saturday by the way. Those ulgy American Football lines took the fan out of watching the soccer game. What's new with stadium news lately?....
Watching on FSC Saturday night, the pointy-ball lines bothered me for about 5 minutes. Then I figured out where the sidelines were, got into the flow of the game, and enjoyed the RSL victory thoroughly for the next 85+ minutes. For stadium news, check the "ultimate stadium" thread.
Between the field and Dallas' performance, I felt like I stepped into the Wayback Machine and travelled back to 2003. The only thing that was missing was a "oh crap, here we go again" look on DJ Countess' face as goal after goal was being scored on him.
For lots of detail, check out the stadium thread : https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=201472&page=26&pp=15 In short, I'd say it's the usual, preliminary testing of the waters, trying to find a solution that makes sense for the business and can get some political traction. I wouldn't be too woried at this point that a site hasn't been found. It'll take some time for the attendance stats to filter into the political thinking as "butts in seats = votes I can get".
Do you really believe it was the turf that caused your defense to stand around like they didn't know a game was in progress?
Of course. At the same time, however, I lost track of how many FCD through-balls went long because they were on the faster FieldTurf and not grass. Moreover, Mathis' free-kick, after the FCD wall parted like the Red Sea, got to Garlick's goal as quickly as it did because it was on FieldTurf. Still, our defense of set pieces was pathetic.
I can agree with ElJefe that balls just fly along the turf. That is why RSL has the advantage at home, no matter what their record. RSL knows how fast the ball will be. Not to say that any FCD players have never played on turf though...
I kind of like the gridiron lines on the field. It's cool because you can now figure out the exact distance a striker is away from the goal!
Just wait until the field is painted. That Labor Day weekend game Sept 3 will have a nice painted football field (for Utah vs Arizona Sept 2), and will have lightly painted yellow lines for the soccer field. That is how the field will look for the rest of the year.
Thank you for explaining how a football field is lined. As a fan of more than just soccer, and as a Fire fan who's seen games in both Naperville and Soldier Field, not to mention previous experience playing and coaching soccer on football fields, I needed to be told how lining a field worked. Again, it wasn't that bad for the Dallas game, and furthermore, football lines are not the worst things in the world.
I have to say that it's always worse on tv than in person. So, go to all the games and you will be less annoyed.
