Towards the end of this @bshredder piece on the U-17s, Brian mentions that the U-20s are “tentatively scheduled” to open the 2019 cycle with a January camp. Details later. http://www.americansoccernow.com/articles/what-does-the-future-hold-for-the-us-u-17-teenagers
Give me this group (Scott, Gonzalez and Torres with their pro teams, Adams January camp). GK: Garces, Lopez, Muse DF: Lindsey, Dest, Gloster, Rogers, Araujo, Arteaga, Real, McKenzie MF: Durkin, Sands, Goslin, Booth, Carleton, Pomykal, Taitague, Cappis, de la Fuente FW: Sargent, Weah, Perez
I can imagine a joint U23/U20 camp run by Ramos instead of the senior January camp. No reason to bring the senior guys away from their golfing break.
Crazy thought -- hold concurrent MNT/U23, U20/U19 and U18/17/16 camps all at the same time, in three separate locations across the country, along with a bunch of other events. Open tryouts! Bake sales! Charity tournaments! Freestyle competitions! Send a powerful message: It's go time. Put out a ton of press releases and media. Get people fired up.
Nah, need one for the players who aren't YNT-eligible but will be 30 or younger in 2022 WC. Arriola, Roldan, Rowe, K. Acosta, Agudelo, etc... Also still important to reward strong domestic seasons for the likes of Ike Opara, CJ Sapong and Christian Ramirez even though they very likely won't be part of tbe cycle in 2022. That carrot still has value.
I don't disagree, but we also have quiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiite a long time before we have to prepare for meaningful games. So we'll have plenty of time to look at those guys. We've had joint U20/U23 camps in the past. I believe we had one in Europe, and it was the first camp that Brooks went to. 2010?
Really, an entire camp for 5 guys? If Acosta isn't in Europe that will be a shame and he is probably a dead end. He just doesn't have the physical game to play in the center of midfield. Opara is old. The type of player we don't ever have to call in (28 year old MLS players). If Arena didn't play an MLS player they must really be deficient; and he didn't play Roldan, Rowe, or Agudelo and didn't call in Sapong (also 28, ship has passed) or Ramirez. Since I think Arena is an idiot, I would look at Ramirez, maybe Roldan. But hardly worth a camp. Really like the U23/U20 combined camp. Oh, and their won't be a NT coach for any January camp.
Is "etcetera" a term with you are not familiar? For the record, here is a list of MLS and Scandinavian-based players who are 25 or younger but are too old for any current USYNT who have already been capped by the senior team. Kellyn Acosta Juan Agudelo Paul Arriola Luis Gil Jesse Gonzalez (not capped but cap-tied) Perry Kitchen Sebastian Lletget Jordan Morris Cristian Roldan Kelyn Rowe Rubio Rubin Wil Trapp Brandon Vincent Walker Zimmerman And here's a list of uncapped players of similar age who, IMO, might warrant a look. Fatai Alashe Alex Bono Russell Canouse Cody Cropper Marky Delgado Kortne Ford Marlon Hairston Ian Harkes Nick Lima Kekuta Manneh Alex Muyl Jake Nerwinski Tim Parker Matt Polster Harry Shipp Zack Steffen Tommy Thompson Eriq Zavaleta So, that is what "etc..." means.
Great list. I really don't care either way if we have a camp. But there will be no coach, so I don't see any reason to have a camp other than to give these guys a camp. That they have 5-6 months off from MLS is a joke. A U20/U23 camp makes much more sense. You have a coach and a need. There will be a big overlap in the lists. If you want to bring older guys for a work out, that always happens. Do like the women do (but for mostly CBA reasons) and bring all the YNTs into one big camp. I'd rather watch our U20 team play our U19 team than any 11 of the above play Iceland B. Plus, Olympic and U20 qualifying will happen with mostly domestic players like the ones you list. More reps the better. But you have to agree that bringing a bunch of over 26 MLS guys to a camp with Sarachan, Richie Williams and Kenny Arena in charge is a worthless exercise.
Given our circumstance, it would make no sense for any coach to have a camp with mostly players over 26. To be clear, there will be some players who will be in their early 30s in 2022 who will be part of this coming cycle. But not many.
There were six listed. you forgot about etc. etc is a pretty good player. He can clog the defensive midfield and cover a lot of ground!
You could have listed Many More. He's quite often on people's lists even in other categories as he's multi talented.
I bet this is a mostly domestic camp, since not a lot of European teams are gonna see the point of a u20 camp with qualifying over a year away. Out of Sargent, Weah, Shaft, Amon, Konrad, Juan Pablo Torres, Hilton, and Scott, which are most of the foreign-based players I see in contention right now, I can only easily see Amon and Hilton coming, along with possibly Sargent, depending on when he actually can begin training with Bremen. Also, isn't Ferreira supposed to be eligible now?
For reference, here's the last January camp under Ramos -- it was a big one, mostly (but not entirely) domestic: GOALKEEPERS: Jonathan Klinsmann (California; Newport Beach, Calif.), JT Marcinkowski (Georgetown; Alamo, Calif.), Mason Stajduhar (Orlando City SC; Lithia, Fla.), Justin Vom Steeg (Santa Barbara; Santa Barbara, Calif.) DEFENDERS: Danny Acosta (Real Salt Lake; San Pedro Sula, Honduras), Hugo Arrellano (LA Galaxy; Norwalk, Calif.), Jonathan Bell (DC United; Rockville, MD), Marcello Borges (Michigan; Kearny, N.J.), David Burns (Sacramento Republic; El Dorado Hills, Calif.), Aaron Herrera (New Mexico; Casa Grande, Ariz.), Malcolm Jones (UCLA, Chino Hills, Calif.), Andrew Lombard (Northeastern, Montclair, N.J.), Mauricio Pineda (Chicago Fire; Bolingbrook, Ill.), Miles Robinson (Syracuse; Arlington, Mass.), Tommy Redding (Orlando City SC; Oviedo, Fla.), Diego Silva (Maryland; Provo, UT) MIDFIELDERS: Amir Bashti (Stanford; Cupertino, CA), Cameron Lindley (Indiana Fire; Carmel, IN), Lucas Mendes (DC United; Arlington, VA), Matt Olosunde (New York Red Bulls; Trenton, N.J.), Martin Salas (UNC; Dallas, Texas), Yosef Samuel (Philadelphia Union; Philadelphia, PA), Evan Waldrep (Creighton, Peoria, Ariz.), Eryk Williamson (Maryland; Alexandria, VA), Jackson Yueill (UCLA; Bloomington, Minn.), Alex Zendejas (FC Dallas; El Paso, Texas) FORWARDS: Coy Craft (FC Dallas; Frisco, Texas), Jeremy Ebobisse (Duke; Bethesda, MD), Sebastian Elney (Maryland; West Chester, PA), Juan Flores (Houston Dynamo; Houston, Texas), Victor Mansaray (Seattle Sounders; Des Moines, WA), Josh Perez (AFC Fiorentina; La Habra, Calif.), Emmanuel Sabbi (Chicago Magic; Libertyville, Ill.), Abu Winter (Philadelphia Union; Newtown Square, PA), Isaiah Young (PDA; Berlin, NJ) https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...ayer-roster-florida-camp-roster-to-begin-2016 (Josh Doughty was also named to and then removed from this roster.) Perhaps worth noting that the last two cycles had fall Finals-year camps, which this one did not. Given that, it's possible that there might be some more effort to bring in Europe-based players to start the cycle off, though given the logistical difficulties that might not be possible. (And presumably less so if the guys in question are first-team players.) If form holds, there won't be another camp before March/April.
We haven't had an update on Ferreira's status. These matters always take longer than our projected timelines.......................
H/t to @soccersubjectively who posted a great summary of an interview with Tony Lepore at TopDrawerSoccer over in the YNT and USSF scouting thread. This is a quote from Lepore where he talks about the upcoming U-20 camp: “There will be some movement too with some of the 00s playing with the 99s for the players who are on the track to be part of the U20 World Cup cycle. We also use the January camp to call in a lot of international players.” (Emphasis mine)
Hmm. I do remember someone saying some specific date, but I can't remember if it was December 2017, 2018, or December 2018. More likely, I'm just starting to go insane.
Okay, here we go. First U-20 camp of the new cycle will be part of a YNT "summit" with teams from 5 different age groups: U-20, U-19, U-18, U-17, and U-16. State University; Garner, N.C.), Matthew Real (Bethlehem Steel FC; Drexel Hill, Pa.), James Sands (New York City FC; Rye, N.Y.), Aedan Stanley (St. Louis FC; Columbia, Ill.), Angel Uribe (Club Tijuana; San Diego, Calif.), Sam Vines (Charlotte Independence; Charlotte, N.C.), Carson Vom Steeg (Stanford University; Santa Barbara, Calif.)
