Short answer: Who f****ng knows. Long answer: We've heard that there's a bunch of people looking to buy the Crew to keep them in the city because they're a net positive for everyone. What we HAVEN'T heard (and have no idea about) is what kind of owners they would be. And there are way, way too many variables to think about to even begin thinking about that answer. Are we staying in Crew Stadium, or building something new? If they have to splash cash on that, they may not be eager to spend a ton of money on coaches and players for a couple of years. Are there going to be any people in the ownership group that fancy themselves as soccer people, who think they know how to run the team itself? Are they going to be hands on, or hands off? And no one can predict whether or not Berhalter flames out in epic fashion or wins an MLS Cup.
I hold myself to the highest standards. It's mostly the same points I've been making for two years!!!
NYCFC boss Domènec Torrent absolutely gushed over Gregg Berhalter postgame. "They have a clever coach. I love this coach. I think he’s one of the best coaches in our conference. … I think they’re a candidate to win MLS."— Andrew (@AndrewKingCbus) September 2, 2018
That's exactly my point. And this is where Torrent displays his true genius. He's only what, 5 games into his MLS coaching career. But, looking at Berhalter's record, he sees 5 years and no trophies to speak of. He doesn't really view Berhalter as a rival for MLS Cup, and certainly not the Supporters Shield or US Open Cup. So where does Torrent undercut him, where it hurts the most, sportsmanship. He is angling for NYCFC to get that Fair Play trophy. Knowing that the Crew has won the award an MLS record 5 times, knowing that Berhalter led us to the 2016 Fair Play trophy, Torrent is playing the media like a true master. It's manipulative. It undercuts our best chance at a trophy this year, but it's also genius.
We beat an undermanned NYCFC squad and a renowned (?) coach said some nice things about Gigi, and I still want to Boot Berhalter.
Earnie Stewart is not even calling candidates yet. He is waiting until the end of the MLS season. 3G is a smart money bet as having the inside track. If he gets it, we should hire Guille immediately.
I asked Earnie Stewart about rumors Gregg Berhalter is a lock to be hired as #USMNT head coach. “I haven’t had interviews. He’s not the shoe-in. That’s not the case.”— Ives Galarcep (@SoccerByIves) September 6, 2018 Stewart also shot down notion he will hire Berhalter because they are close friends. “We played together and we’ve communicated with each other, but friends is a little overboard.”— Ives Galarcep (@SoccerByIves) September 6, 2018 Hire Gigi! Bring back Guille!
I trust the experience Fratass gained during his two-week stint as a youth soccer coach where in fact he never actually performed any coaching. He just ate the kids snacks and tossed out words like Pele, Superbowl, and offsides. The kids were needed to correct his use of Superbowl.
#CrewSC’s Gregg Berhalter today on the open #LAGalaxy job: “My focus and our focus is completely on this team, this year... This is the crucial time of the year and anything else I’m not focused on.”— Patrick Murphy (@_Pat_Murphy) September 11, 2018 Go west, young man.
Things I'm expecting from LAG, based on convos w/ sources around MLS:-They make a big run at Gregg Berhalter, who could probably demand the coach/GM gig he has w/ Crew.-Failing that, they hire a GM (Ali Curtis?) and let them run search. Caleb Porter would likely be in the mix.— Sam Stejskal (@samstejskal) September 14, 2018 Boot Berhalter! Go with Guille!
Can LA just hire Lalas and Twellman as coach/ass coach and rid ourselves of multiple problems please?
Sometimes people ask me, “Hang, what is the biggest myth about Berhalter coached teams?” It’s an easy question to answer, but difficult to explain to the cultists. We hear over and over again about the thrill of possession based soccer. We hear over and over about the chances that this creates for our attacking players. But then we sit through another goalless game like tonight. One shot on goal in 90 minutes. A team averaging barely 1.25 goals per game. A team who has had only one player score more than two goals from the run of play this season. This man is not a genius. He’s a charlatan. A snake oil salesman. Anyone can look beyond the narrative and see it clearly if they are not a cultist. End boring soccer. Bring excitement back to Columbus Crew.
I’m told that Mikael Stahre has been fired as head coach of #Quakes74. Steve Ralston to take over on interim basis. Story to follow.— Jeff Carlisle (@JeffreyCarlisle) September 17, 2018 'Tis the season! Boot Berhalter!
Shout out to Gregg Berhalter for fielding and Open Cup type lineup vs a tough team on the road. Nothing helps build a winning mentality going into a playoff run like conceding a game before it even starts. What a ********in joke.
