Gregg Berhalter appears to be learning from past tactical mistakes and I am quite pleased about that.
*major trophies Apparently we won something in 2016... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLS_Fair_Play_Award
There is a lower probability of winning the Eastern Conference championship today, than there was of winning MLS Cup in the first years of the league.
Sorry for this crosspost but it fits better here: 3G had excellent criticism of disciplinary committee's disparate penalties to Zlatan and Christian Martinez. He perfectly conveyed disapproval of CM's action, CM's remorse, and the curious different treatment of two players for similar actions very succinctly.
Wasn't Zlatan actually sent off in that game? Martinez wasn't. Since you cannot give a half game suspension (at least in soccer), I can see why Martinez got two games
That win percentage is a bit disingenuous. Usually you get half credit for a draw--and there were no draws early in MLS's history.
If that chart is up to date we are looking at August 23rd as the likely date in which Berhalter sets the club record for most games coached without a major trophy? I'll be sending out celebration invites in the coming weeks.
Sadly, we've never won the ATX Challenge Armadillo Cup. I want that trophy so bad, now more than ever!
No, you don't get half credit for a draw in soccer. It's the "win" percentage, not the "not loss" percentage. If you think that's disingenuous or not fair, here's the "not loss" percentage* for each coach (a half-point for each draw): Even with ties considered, the story doesn't change for Gigi. He's still ranked 5th among Crew coaches. Happy? But the win percentage is not the point. As our beloved @hangthadj has repeatedly noted, Gigi will be the longest-serving Crew coach by the end of the season. Despite having more time and control than any other coach in team history, he hasn't won any major trophies. Sorry, but being runner-up isn't good enough. *I suck at math so the numbers may be off.
Well, you also have to factor in the fact that the league has grown. It's a lot easier to win a trophy in a 10 team league than in a 23 team league. To fail to take that into account is disingenuous, at best. But we've had this argument before.
Anyone wanna give me a quick rundown of Berhalter's record in the easiest competition to win a major trophy? What a ********in nightmare. Again.
It's a fundamental character flaw in Gregg Berhalter that he has yet to show he takes this tournament seriously. It's the first trophy this team won. It's named after our founder. And yet he treats the Charleston Challenge Cup with more respect. Maybe next year the USSF will get rid of the regional pods and we can draw Charleston in the 4th round and it will short circuit Greggbot 3000 and he will field a team capable of winning a game.
It would be nice for Ggg to win one of the big 3 trophies while with the club. We are about the halfway mark for the season with a less than 5% chance at the SS and the Open Cup officially gone. His only chance again is MLS Cup.
Two things. By your lights, our Phillies should take down all of their National League Pennants--because they don't count as a real trophy. Second, by your standards almost every coach in the league would get fired after 3-4 years without a trophy. You can do it, but that does not bode well for consistency and team style over the long haul. Much as I hate the Cardinals (mostly for 2011), they do have a Cardinal Way, which over the long haul has led to a lot of silverware. Also, to flip things on their head, if it's all about trophies, Greg Andrulis must have been a good coach.... I don't think that's the case.
