Any predictions? What are the betting odds @EvanJ ?

Personally I don't see a clear favorite in the Antlers-Chivas match. Espérance would have to be favorites in the evening game. Al Ain's defense as of now does not resemble the Al Jahili Fort on their crest. :D

https://www.oddschecker.com/football/world/world-club-championship disagrees with you and favors Al Ain (I'm not saying the odds are better than you). Here are the probabilities, which include draws regardless of the competition:

    Chivas win: 39.8%
    Draw: 30.5%
    Kashima win: 28.6%

It adds up to 99.9% due to rounding. Chivas was at 40.7% and the odds became more even.

    Al Ain win: 37.1%
    Draw: 29.1%
    Esperance win: 33.8%

Early morning for Chivas fans today - 7:00 am.

Not so much for Kashima supporters (10:00 pm)

I myself am leaving to Al Ain in a couple of hours...

Halftime. Chivas up 1:0 and clearly the better team so far. Could have a higher lead. Kashima really need to step it up.

This ref is shit tbh. Nonexistent penalty, and they don't even use VAR.

Since the current CWC format started in 2005, Concacaf was represented by Costa Rica's Deportivo Saprissa in 2005 and Mexican clubs every year after that. Kashima is the first club outside UEFA to scored 3 goals in a game against the Concacaf champion.

Fulltime. Kashima Antlers win 3:2. Each team got a penalty. Too little too late from Chivas. They thought they had it in the bag at halftime.

    @jared9999 - your thoughts? :D

Perhaps the ref was content with the VAR ref’s assessment via audio?

On a play like that, you need to check twice or thrice, with all due respect.

After a penalty kick in stoppage time, Chivas had a chance to tie it. They got a corner kick, and their goalkeeper, who ran up the field, headed the ball on top of the goal.

Try to get Andrés Cantor's ignorance out of your ears for a moment: the VAR refs do check twice or thrice, they just didn't find the center ref's call to be an obvious error in need of correction.

I don’t disagree. You lot have a better view of what’s happening at home. It didn’t seem like the Chivas players protested a whole lot to force further review. At least from my seat.

Dude, the replay clearly shows it was a dive, no contact. Yes, it was stupid of Tortas to stick his leg out, but it was not a foul.

Whatever the case may be, Chivas have none other but themselves to blame for how they approached the second half. They came out flat and Kashima immediately pounced on it.

Definitely agree with this 100%. I only watched the 2nd half, and Chivas looked like they were thinking of the next game already. Kashima played with heart and that got them back in the game.

The Tunisian expat community is out in full force. Esperance fans pouring into the stadium. Festive bunch. May sit with them again in the semis if they make it.

Poor attendance in the first match as expected. I guess that happens when you put a Mexican and Japanese club in a sleepy desert oasis in the Middle East.

Halftime. Al Ain up 2:0. Talk about a cold shower for the red and yellow half of the stadium. Esperance need to come out strong from the break otherwise it will be another year to forget for CAF in the CWC.

And it ends 3:0 in favor of Al Ain. An embarassing scoreline for Esperance.

That is the Al Jahili Fort. One of the sights in the city of Al Ain. It is on the club logo:

I guess the Jebel Al Hafeet mountain didn't fit. :D
