Of all the drafts going right now, this has been easily the most enjoyable to peruse. It's also the one that I'm most disappointed in not being a drafter. Although, the pace needs to pick up so we can get to GringoTex's next pick.
C'mon, WingsFan - join the rebel draft! The only rule is to try not to pick anyone that an accredited draft member might pick. Who knows - perhaps we'll merge with the real draft or get extra picks in the supplemental round?
No way. We get too much street cred from having our own insurgency. (Although I will say that Thufir has heard what you're planning to serve in your faculty lunch room and has started to agitate, so we might have to, you know, co-opt and normalize.)
For lack of a better pick at the moment, I select... the character Bim from Anita Desai's Clear Light of Day.
The combination of the Jaime Escalante pick and the later selection of Captain Miller made me think of this film/real life professor - IMO one of the greatest Americans of all time: The film version of the professor (thanks Jeff Daniels) . . . . . . and the man, a professor at Bowdoin in Maine both before and after the Civil War. No joke on this one (but not drafted either - not in keeping with the spirit of the rebel draft): Gen. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, whose graciousness in accepting the surrender of the Confederate States still resonates as one of the more powerful moments in US history. Hold the line, 20th Maine! Apologies to anyone with Chamberlain on your list - but since he should've been a first rounder for sure, I can't feel too badly!
I saw Zinn go. I hope that means I am up. This was a particularly difficult round for me. I have three in mind that I was considering, but this one may have been taken sooner. For understanding the differences in people and for trying to control some kids (and adults) that sometimes seem uncontrollable.... for keeping attitudes in check and for always checking IEPs no matter how unbelievable they are... I choose........... Professor X, Charles Xavier.
Sorry sorry, I'm here! I was avoiding BigSoccer until I watched the Galaxy game last night (still haven't finished it yet either). I think I'll take the coolest dean ever, the dean in the episode of the Simpsons when Homer goes back to college--he was also the bassist in the Pretenders. Sorry, can't find a character name or an image.
I haven't finished that one yet either. Okay, I'm going to go with the Teshoo Lama, from Kipling's Kim. He'll occupy the General Motors Chair of Metaphysical Geography and South Asian Religions and, of course, will run the Study Abroad Program.

My choice for round five will be coming up soon.
For my first pick of round five, I will select my school's science/physics teacher. I was REALLY torn between two different fictional characters on this one, but eventually, the nod went to none other than... Dick Solomon-
Gringotex's time has expired and Minorthreat has not made an appearance here in quite awhile (though he's still free to catch up with us when he gets back online). Norsk Troll is up and will have until 4:30am.
Rebel draft, round five: Yes, it's BILL COSBY, ED.D! Not only can he fill many roles (dual degrees in education and physical education) but he isn't afraid to ruffle PC feathers and tell people how to speak and dress. And, if the department needs a quick $50,000, all we need to do is cut a deal with Cos to make a couple of concert appearances and split the fee with us. And would you care to imagine how the students will respond to his lectures? Through the roof on those teacher evals! To review the rebel draft: 1. Dr. J, Julius Erving 2. Dr. Teeth 3. Dr. Hans Zarkov 4. Dr. Rosenrosen 5. Dr. Bill Cosby And I see that I am very quickly in trouble for lack of gender equity practices in my hiring. But, since GringoTex is equally skewed, just the other way, it looks like a merger of the two faculties may be in order.
With the 5th pick of the 5th round TSO selects: Emma Frost the headmistress of the Xavier Institute. And I had already decided on this pick before Prof. X was taken.
So ... GringoTex missed his turn, minorthreat has missed his turn for the past several rounds, Howard Zinn missed his turn, and now Iceblink is coming up on the final hours of his turn. Doesn't look like this draft is going to make it much further.
It's the weekend, so I wouldn't give up hope just yet. I think/hope once the workday week sets in people will be checking the thread more regularly. It's just for fun anyway, so I'd vote in favor of you continuing your policy of leniency for a while longer. In keeping with the school theme (this coming from recess, specifically), we can call it the Olly-olly Oxen Free Rules.
Actually, I usually use the person in front of me as an indicator of when I'm supposed to go. I've been ready for a while... I just didn't know who was on the clock. I also haven't been hovering over my computer waiting for any draft. Anyway, I'm here now... so my next draft pick... for maintaining a multi-cultural classroom when it was certainly not commonplace. She treated her students as equals, and even forgave them when they played hookie. This was... Miss Crabtree
Can't remember what field he's in...he seems to be a bit of a polymath, and can make a radio out of coconuts... From Gilligan's Island, The Professor:
Okay, here's my next pick. Ms. Frizzle, of Magic School Bus fame. However, rather than having her teach elementary school, I'm going to allow her to follow her true calling by giving her a lab and a budget to conduct research on the potential role of psychtropic drugs in early childhood learning, because you know damn well that bus didn't really go all those places. Let her slip mushrooms to grad student volunteers for a change.
