Did anyone hear about this? I found it on mlssoccer.com in their Kick Off thing. This is what it says there:
I read the article. It seems like he's (sort of) trying to raise $40 million for an expansion fee to bring an MLS team to San Diego. That begs the question about the other $100-500 million you need to run the team (including building a stadium). Still, I might have $1,000 I could contribute if this turned into a serious venture.
Exactly what MLS/SUM would want to do --- give a share of their single entity and access to their internal dealings to 40 000 fan-owners. Because MLS likes to be very open about everything.
If this could be pulled off "which would be fantastic" at about 19 million dollars raised, the fan owned shares would definitely be a minority interest in a MLS team. I'd think this would make it more palatable to MLS. The fans would just be another minority partner just like some other MLS teams have.
Apparently so..... http://www.voiceofsandiego.org/opinion/slop/article_c5a970ec-64cd-11e1-b287-0019bb2963f4.html
Wages, insurance, travel, trainers, front office, ticket sales reps, marketing, and taxes to name a few.
To get a team is one thing. The question is how much would be needed every year to keep it afloat until it becomes profitable, assuming it does. For that, I have no idea. I feel like Forbes may have written an article on it though.
