They could also go for independence, if say they had some oil that could help them be self sufficient.

Would the UK and Argentina be ok with that?

I would be ok if Hawaii wanted independence, we did sort of screwed them over when they became a state.

Too small. The population's only about 3000.

Why would Argentina be OK with it? Nothing would change from their perspective, aside from the military option suddenly becoming viable. The islands are already basically self-sufficient, the only money the UK spends on them is on defence.

But Hawaii has a real economy. The Malvinas becoming independent would be like the Island of Lanai becoming independent. It's not realistic.

... and they recently voted to continue with being a UK overseas territory by 1513 votes to 3:

Possibly... but it depends what they can offer the Islanders in terms of improving their lives.

The first thing they need to do is to stop being obstructive, of course, but then maybe they can offer improved access to markets for their goods and services.

Of course, NONE of this can happen if the Argentines are still making bellicose statements and threats and it would have to be negotiated. That's gonna take time even AFTER the situation is normalised.

Kinda makes you wonder who the three was, doesn't it :D

But, yeah... the thing is it already IS up to the islanders. If there were demands for them to be connected to Argentina or even an independent state, (regardless of how impractical that might seem to us), they could do it now.

At least we can find some common ground in football failures, eh?

Nothing you do compares to our ineptitude. We'd take losing on penalites in the final any day of the week.

Yeah, on paper sure, one always wants to advance as far as possible...

But if you knew the feeling... that post-final depression...

Don't write Cristina off. Her delusional supporters (at least on twitter) seem to think she can do wrong. Hope Trump doesn't invade the Malvinas/Falklands, like his hero Andrew Jackson did.

If Cristina Fernández has any chance of returning to public office, legislative or executive power (and she most certainly does) it has nothing to do with Malvinas. Nor does it for any other politician or party.

The issue carries the same weight in Argentina's elections as it did in England one month ago in theirs...

Friends of mine who "visited" the Falklands in the early 80s said the only Spanish speaking islander they met was the barman in Stanley. He could have been one. :)

Then as for Cristina making making it back. The Argies have a history of voting dubious women into office. There was one named Eva that comes to mind.

Yeah, except Eva was never voted into any public office position in her life. Nor was she appointed to any. But hey, if I were to guess, I'd say your only knowledge regarding Eva Duarte comes from a Lloyd Webber musical.

Also, just so you know, she didn't dance with Che Guevara.

PS: BTW, there are many more spanish speaking people living in the island nowadays. Around 2 hundred chileans working the jobs the kelpers don't want or consider beneath them.

Is "kelper" not considered a xenophobic term?

I'm sorry if it is and if anyone was offended. I will not use it again.

Rest assured i'm not when referred as an "argie". Although others may.

I don't find "kelpers" offensive. I personally find "Bennies" to be more offensive.
