Congrats to the USA! Had to go through four good teams in the KO's. Got to respect that. Hard luck to the Dutch. They got the game to the point when it was going to be a sole error or bit of brilliance to win the game. Unfortunately it went against them. Nice chatting to everyone on here during the tournament
Well done, US. But being primarily a fan of Nadeshiko Japan and everything they stand for, I'm really missing the time when a women's team can go on a giantkilling spree despite having a clear physical disadvantage over their opponents. I hope to see another underdog emulate what Japan did with great technique, great teamwork, and no controversy off the pitch. See you in the Tokyo Olympic Tournament threads.
They aren’t sending midfield runs in support with the 2 goal lead. The attacker was kinda probing a 1v1 trying to get a defender on her back foot, kinda waiting for anyone else to bother to come forward. One of the things that ticks me off about Ellis. Just put it away and send players.
Congrats USA - tough luck Netherlsnds .... that poor lady who conceded the penalty... been watching too much Nigel de Jong I'm afraid...
Really? And what about Fabio Cannavaro, Ballon d'Or on the balance of the 2006 year? That was a warrior who got the plaudits.
Well deserved win by the US who were the fittest team in the tournament and had players who could fill in without losing a beat. Kudos to all the UEFA teams who demonstrated that the future of women's soccer may actually lie outside the US and of course Japan who are retooling and will be very good in the next tournament.

Physically speaking there is a stark contrast between Americans and the rest. Europeans are not there yet. It's almost like watching a game between a team of 13 year-olds and a team of 16 year-olds. It's good to see Europe investing more in the women's game but progress remains slow. I guess there's just not enough girls playing the game at the younger age. Congratulations to the US for their 4th victory.
I can finally write this (with no disrespect meant to any team): USA 5 -- UEFA 0 Back when the Netherlands won the Euro championship, I was wishing the USA could play in such a competitive tournament. I got my wish. USA beat: #9 Sweden, #13 Spain, #4 France, #3 England, #8 Netherlands.
Post tourny mod note: Thanks everybody to posting, and posting with general respect. Was busier than in 2015, but with fewer problems. I appreciate all of you who came for a visit and took the time to understand the tone. I also would like to welcome several new members to BS - thanks for joining, and keep posting. A few special thanks: Thanks to @Gilmoy for starting to many threads. Thanks to @blissett to starting a few as well, and for correcting me when I needed to be corrected. Thanks to @mattypark for all the gifs Thanks to @lil_one for the pre-tournament roster/age thread. I personally referenced it many times. Thanks to @zdravstvuyte for managing the WWC Fantasy Football thread/game. A notable thanks to @McSkillz for the early call out on me about possible sexism in my posting. I appreciated it, and those posts always makes me think (as post a person, but also how I can moderate better). There are so many others as well, and this time was much more fun than in 2015 in part, because of you all. Thank you. Oh, and thanks to @Romario'sgurl because after the US winning another WWC, I think she needs it.
Scrolling through the list of Ballon d'Or winners, I saw a number of illustrious defensive names in there: Franz Beckenbauer (twice), Lothar Matthaüs, Matthias Sammer, Fabio Cannavarro, Lev Yashin. And I agree with Orange14 that Van Dijk is on his way to win it this year.
And in reality, apart from the Sweden match, it really was the other team which could not score/break the US defending.
It’s cool brah. The crazy thing is 2 years ago, I had planned to purchase tickets for the final. Something told me not to. Bullet dodged.
Bleacher Report football tweeted this and then deleted it. Even the kid from Stranger Things is on there
And thanks to you as well for all of your hard work around here. Its always fun to watch the WWC and cheer on your team, but all of you around here make it fun to also get to discuss it and that adds to the whole experience.
