The rules have been published by the league. Of note: Draft is Dec 11 at noon MT FCC will have 5 picks FCC can NOT pick from the 5 teams that LAFC picked from (CLB, SJ, SEA, SKC, TFC) This is considered a "continuation" of the LAFC draft, so rules will be similar Homegrown players not on the senior roster are automatically protected Designated players are not automatically protected Players with a no-trade clause must be protected Only one player may be selected from a given team So, as is always a fun game, who does RSL protect?
For context, this is who we protected last time: KB Glad Horst Mulholland Plata Rimando Rusnak Bofo Savarino LSilva MSilva The following were exempt (I'm guessing a few of these changed) Acosta Allen Hernandez Lennon Velazco
Unless rules changed here, exempt this time should be Lennon, Herrera, Hernandez, Acosta, and Baird. I don't really get why we'd protect a free agent, but we did last time. There must be some logic there that I don't understand.
Remind me how this worked with Yura. Didn't he have a no trade clause? And is he still technically on our roster?
They never announced this but I assume he waived his no-trade clause cause he was fine going somewhere else. We don't have to protect him this time since he's not on our roster - we just have to pay him.
Thank you. I was thinking that they would be on the Senior roster since they had played quite a bit for the senior team.
Thanks @irondeepbicycle for the roster link This is the list of players (I believe) to pick from to protect: Jordan Allen Shawn Barry Kyle Beckerman Tony Beltran Nick Besler Justen Glad Adam Henley David Horst Damir Kreilach Jacob Leeker Ricky Lopez-Espin Luke Mulholland Nedum Onuoha Taylor Peay Demar Phillips Joao Plata Andrew Putna Nick Rimando Pablo Ruiz Albert Rusnak Sebastian Saucedo Jefferson Savarino Luis Silva Marcelo Silva Connor Sparrow Sunny
Here are my 11 to protect: Kyle Beckerman Justen Glad Damir Kreilach Luke Mulholland Nedum Onuoha Joao Plata Nick Rimando Albert Rusnak Sebastian Saucedo Jefferson Savarino Sunny
Agreed. And then likely lose either Ruiz (inexpensive young player with skill and a nice left) or Beltran (experienced right back.)
I don't think there is enough out there on Ruiz for FCC to take the risk. yes, he's "inexpensive" (arguable given his numbers) but he doesn't have stats to back being picked. I kind of want Beltran to get picked so this fanbase can ********ing move on from him. Tony was a great player. There is NOTHING about this injury and time off that suggests he'll come back to the same player he was. Further, this fanbase will fetishize having him at RB over Lennon despite (assuming we use the same tactics) it being the wrong decision to do so. I don't dislike Tony. I dislike what a lot of vocal fans think he brings vs what he actually brings.
I wish I more fully understood how free agency and the expansion draft interact. I.e., if we decline Beckerman's option, he's a free agent. If FCC selects him, he could just turn around and sign with us anyway. There are certain rights they'd be getting - i.e., there's a cap on how big a raise you can get in free agency, but the original club can re-sign you to whatever amount they want. So FCC could draft him and offer him way more money than we could... but we're surely not going to be offering Beckerman a raise this offseason. At least I would hope not. So I can't think of any reason to protect Rimando, Beckerman, or Beltran - they'd all be eligible for free agency so we'd just be able to re-sign them. But last time we did protect free agents so there's presumably some reason to do so.
Protect Horst over Attinella. That will clearly pan out well. Stupid Timbers always take our cake and it it too.
It’s not just the fanbase imo. There is a certain person in a top level leadership position who I am concerned will meddle to make Tony the starting RB, just as he will have KB continue to be a starting DM next year.
I think the club would rather not take the risk that FCC make an offer that is too good to pass up. Think of it from any of those three perspective: getting one last HUGE paycheck in a new place that looks to be a pretty damn fun place to play or continue on the negotiated salary here and retire? I have no problem with RSL using one of their protected slots on those guys just to avoid the situation. remember, because of the way this draft is setup, the league gave FCC more funny money to play with. They'll use that if the right player is out there.
I believe Beckerman was above budget maximum charge for this year. That means that if RSL offers him at least $1 above the budget maximum he loses his free agency status, even if that amount was less than his previous year salary. However, if FCC selects him in the expansion draft, then they would have that option instead of RSL.
KB is overpaid as is, but this sheds light as to why the number is what it is. His agent really took Waibel to the cleaners.
With the news on option exercises released today revealing only 20 remaining rostered players, RSL's protected list becomes fairly academic. Those listed in yellow are exempt because they are non-senior roster HG's. Those in green are almost certainly those that will be protected.
Is it weird I want FCC to take one of those remaining players? It would open cap space that we desperately need. Putna is really the only one I would be sad to go. Which is weird, because just two years ago I was talking up Jordan Allen to be the next big thing. Unfortunately he can't walk outside without getting hurt.
