Do you honestly think a soccer league in the US wouldn't have grown substantially over the last 20 years without Garber?

The league was going to grow tremendously with or without Garber.
Additionally, he's had some huge failures. (Fusion, Tampa, Chivas, Miami expansion, the DPR, and the sponsors and TV contract are nowhere near where they should be.)

He's done it all using unethical business practices. Think of all of the money spent by people/cities pushing expansion plans on Garber's word only to fail because MLS never had any intention of awarding a team to them. He was just using them as leverage.

    His greed overpowers his morals.

In the words of Paul Westerberg -
    "Givin' out their word
Cause that's all that they won't keep
    "

    Sport Billy,
I'm with you, born and raised in Collinsville, wanted that to happen, bad... Was all set to take my young ones to see the Athletica play at SIUE next week, only to see them move to Fenton, and then fold... New joint use NFL/MLS stadium... Edgerley pushing too hard for public money. Did I miss anything? That's a lot of drama, for too long of a time

I'd still love to see a team here, won't be a season tix guy though, a game or two a year like the Blues & Cards. follow them at my leisure online & tv.

Probably would have grow without him, but would it be better / stronger/ or more importantly RICHER with out him...

Three simple letter explain this N.F.L. That's where he learned, and most of the original owners are / were NFL guys too.

I agree. It will be great for the young adult crowd, but I’m past that. Repeated kicking leaves me disinterested.

Great point. Never thought of that.

NFL used to be the greatest spectator sport. Now it’s horrible to watch. Hopefully, it doesn’t happen to the beautiful game.

No I think Lamar and Clark Hunt and maybe the Krafts had a lot to do with it. I'll never forgive Garber for letting AEG hijack, and fraudulently and crookedly move my Quakes. Anywhere else on earth, he along with others involved will have ghone to jail but here he was revered.

Garber is just the mouthpiece / point man for the owners. His opinions may hold some sway, but at the end of the day, he's an employee, not the boss. If the Hunts or Krafts (both NFL alum) weren't ok with AEG, they would/could have stopped them. Just remember how happy you were when you got another team back, ala Baltimore, Cleveland, Houston, Oakland, LA, and yes even St. Louis

Again, note the NFL influence. NFL has always been willing to allow teams to move if the money is right, despite what they may tell you.

Yeah that was a screwey move. No other MLS team has moved and those antics were scandalous at best.

. As far as being happy, only to a point. We got the team back and eventually a new stadium but Quakes fans have had nothing major to be happy about since 2005 when the team relocated.

We were robbed of the best player this country has ever seen coupled with a championship team that overall won 4 MLS Cups and two Supporters Shield all in 8 seasons or from 2001-2008.

When the team came back, they never quite recovered with the exception of the 2010 playoff team and the dynamic 2012 season. Other than that , the Earthquakes since 2008 have been a complete failure.

This year’s edition or rather, since Matias Almeyda took over, things are looking up. Hopefully, we can build off of what he is doing as he has the team playing beautifully.

This still doesn’t erase all the years of heartache we have gone through though…

What you experience was as close as you'll get to relegation in MLS. Notts County fans have been suffering similar emotions since we were relegated from D2 in 1995.

Yeah but did they have a great player stolen from them without compensation , crookedly without having to face any criminal charges?

In any country on earth , the actors and/or players involved will have been fined, faced fraudulent charges , jail time and relegated as a last measure. Here the teams owners were treated as royalty , saviors and winners.

Heck Luciano Moggi and Juventus got relegated to Serie B , sold all their players, faced at least (for them ) six years of purgatory for having alleged “influences over referees”. Nothing was really ever proven with the exception of one game in which they lost. Juventus in comparison to AEG were cub scouts.

People may not like to read and know about or maybe like to forget but these are facts and truths. What they did was criminal at best. They didn’t fix matches there and their , they fixed the league in their favor.

Congrats guys! I can’t wait to root against y’all on the field and root for y’all off the field. St. Louis isn’t my baby but I remember how excited I was when Atlanta finally got a team... MLS wouldn’t be complete without you guys.

Garber knows the money game/business side, and the tactics he employs all done by all the other sports leagues in one fashion or another. BUT he is not a soccer guy. Never was, never will be in my opinion.
MLS holds a lot of influence on soccer overall in this country and combined with the ineptitude of USSF, the game is still hurting structurally. Not all MLS teams are even in their stadiums, crowds, setting up academies, will to spend, DP's etc.
For a league with all owners have a vested interest/share of the total league, there needs to be more pressure put on the under performers.

So in your opinion what qualifies one as a "soccer guy"? Garber has been intimately involved with soccer at its highest level in this country for 20 years now, nearly 1/3 of his entire life.

Not trying to change your mind or even debate, just curious. Makes me wonder who you regard as a true "soccer person" in your opinion. Did Lamar Hunt qualify?

Congrats on getting in! Well deserved.

Not a fan of Garble, but that is to be epected from Crew (and SJ) fans.

A soccer guy respects the history of this game in this country and the game itself. I know some things were in motion before Garber took over. Example, I would have preferred from day one, single table regular season champion (no playoffs- not everything has to be copied from other US sports) and the Open Cup as the bigger more important true national championship. Yes, the league was too small at the beginning (10 team if I remember)so regular season would have been too short. Shoot outs and the how the clock ran also thankfully left us. After MLS 1 was filled up and capped at 20 teams, then MLS 2 should have been created and a pro/rel all within the same single entity league may have been possible. Now with a bigger MLS and and even larger USL network, probably won't ever happen. It will be also very interesting to see if USL can even pull that off. Unlike England, we don't have the luxury of huge TV money were teams get a parachute payment when they drop. Maybe if we have the NFL type TV money....
While I understand Garber is paid by the owners to do what he does, the MLS is simply an island doing its own thing.
It doesn't necessarily help the game in general across the country- working better with the lower leagues, I don't think we have enough American player on the rosters or field at times because we have to have the foreign stars to drive ticket sales, I see a disconnect with the National Team at times and some days I feel the MLS relationship with USSF sometimes is the MLS thinks its in charge rather than the USSF who should really be taking a stronger stand on structure of soccer top to bottom in the country.
Soccer people would be former players, former coaches, former owners who breath soccer.Unfortunately, they don't necessarily have the money or the power to do what has been done by MLS so far.
I guess in summary, if you believe the MLS has "made it" and is not going away, then how about considering moving towards some of the soccer ideas of others, me included. It can't simply be a totally insulated operation from everything else going on with soccer in the country. I felt if the league had been traditional from the start, more traditional fans would follow. New fans being created- and I have many conversations with new fans- of why we did things different and they were changed or why we still do things different from other soccer countries. Had we taught the new fans the proper traditions from the beginning, the league would have gotten off to a better start and if you consider where we are now, maybe even beyond this point as well.
Anyway, sorry for the rambling rant. Warm night, couple of beers and Garbers name was enough to get me going !

I actually praised him initially. This still doesn’t mean Garber wasn’t responsible, didn’t know about or didn’t try and stop some of AEG’s and Precourts shady dealings in regards to the Quakes and the Crew. I do recall him sending a public letter to Uncle Phil around 2006 in regards to Houston’s stadium situation and that he wasn’t happy about the SJ to Houston move. I can’t recall too much after that. Anschutz probably got his lawyers to tell him to shut up...

The announcement is Tuesday but will they pull a Cincinnati and field a team next season or will there be a longer wait?
