A lot of positions have got better. The age of the specialist isn't quite gone, but there are a lot of defensive midfielders who can carry the ball or who are very good technically and organized.

I think SAF did that pretty well, never really played DMs who could just sit, Butt was an exceptional DM but a limited footballer and hence was a backup.

Would it be a reach to call Carrick a game changer, a DM who was as good as any DLP out there. Maybe me but he is an extremely underrated player and will remain.

I think Alonso belongs next to Carrick in that regard. They were the best passers over range on their team, immaculate on the ball in general, astute defensively and good enough to slide between the CBs after the ball has been advanced, allowing both FBs to advance.

Safe to say that Cholo was very happy by today's win.

He did show courage with his subs to go and get that win. Well deserved in the end.

Quality of distribution moves to wherever there's space (even if it has to be the GK), work rate moves to shut it down, and the high press demands that players have a minimum level of technical ability to cope. The Crap 90s football Twitter account is seriously jaw dropping when you see how much more technical modern CBs are than many early Premier League forwards.

The 10 has been moving towards this modern take for a decade now - I'm pretty sure Villa were using Ashley Young as a 10 for a while and people were talking about the role of the 'central winger' who pulls wide and overloads a flank, and we had our use of Park as a defensive 10.

    Simeone defends his celebration.

I hope it not to be the case but it wouldn't be surprised if he were to be charged for this by UEFA. Not the most couth gesture, but if it wasn't addressed to any of the Juve travelling fans (which I do not believe it was), then he shouldn't get punished for it.
He's can be abrasive, as he was in his playing days, but he's still a refreshing character in the game that should not be snuffed out.
