Sometimes you play ugly and win. Sometimes you play beautiful and lose. When you play stronger opponent, you switch to play more defensively, you need to work harder, run more, focus more than your opponents then perhaps you have a chance. Against weaker opponent, you may play more offensively. With a strong mentality, Portugal seems to play better after losing Ronaldo because the players stepped up and worked harder. Also France did not convert their chances when they had (Gignac, Griezmann). Poor tournament but a surprise final result. I was wrong to think either Germany or France will win this. Unpredictability is a beautiful thing about football.
