Barnetta misses the Bulgaria game as he's out 6-7 weeks. Will Stocker make it? I certainly have my reservation about Emeghara as a replacement. D. Degen on the right (Shaq on the left) is another alternative (remember Behrami is suspended).

Meanwhile we're up 2-0 in Vaduz. Derdiyok scored the 1st and an own goal doubled the lead.

Ended up being 2-1 for the Swiss. Mario Frick got an assist in his 100th match for the principality. It will be a long time before someone of his quality emerges again for the principality.

I even forgot about the match last night, so missed most of it

nice a few players got a chance.

but we need some good attacking moves... That's one thing I'm missing since Hitzfeld took over. Maybe, in training it works better. Still have hope that it comes good. Servette and Lausanne also moved up although they were 14 or 15 points behind Lugano/Vaduz at some point

I'm completely dumbstruck by this squad. 4 second division players?! That is not setting a good example my dear Ottmar. Also Xhaka who's been injured for months?

That's one way to put it. Well well, I won't go Hitzfeld-bashing again since we got enough players to keep the 2nd division ones off the pitch. I expect something like this.

Benaglio; Lichtsteiner, Djourou, Senderos, Ziegler; Inler, Dzemaili; Shaqiri, Xhaka, Degen; Derdiyok

I really don't want to see Emeghara and Mehmedi in the starting XI, although it might be too soon for Xhaka I'd rather see him behind Derdiyok. Would've been perfect to call up Abdi for this one.. With Stocker, Barnetta and Behrami out we look really thin on the flanks.

Xhaka only might be back in Basels team this weekend. Not sure whether he is match fit.

Degen is fit and has shown a good 30mins vs Braga.

for the 2nd division players, it's more a case per case decision. A bit surprised about Padalino being called up again. Serie B has only started yesterday with Padalino's Sampdoria and at least he was in the starting XI. Gelson scored with Leicester last week. A good sign for him. So, I'm less concerned about Gelson than about the players in Italy as the Italian championship hasn't started yet and Serie A might not start this weekend.

Generally, I'm happy with the selection. Why? The oldest players are born in 1983... With Frei, Streller, Huggel and Grichting gone before/after the England match, Hitzfeld has finally decided to turn the page and is trying to build something for the WC qualifiers. This is a very positive sign.

But still, the time the team is together needs to be used to improve the attacking movement which has been bad so far.

for Emeghara, at least he is in good shape having scored a hattrick unfortunately vs Servette. Also Degen is in good shape and for once I'm happy having him in the team. There are quite a few NT players which have not been in great shape lately, but maybe the NT break will help them to find back to shape

Interesting decision. I am not one to question a decision like this, there are personal reasons, but I would assume that desire to play in the World Cup would lead someone to Switzerland over Venezuela.

in Hitzfelds selection I can see two clear signs:

    1) the oldest player is 28
He is clearly trying to build a squad WC qualification hoping at the same time that the young team can qualify itself for the EC. This is a positive sign. We always asked him to bring in more younger players. Although, part of decision is foreced by some players retirements.
    2) he is not calling up players who are only substitues at their teams and trying to call up players who are first team players regardless whether they play in the SL, the 2nd league in Italy or England. He is preferring those players to players who sit on the bench in Germany, Italy or elsewhere. This is also positive as most players need regular match practice. Tough, there are surely 2 or 3 players who would not need so much match practice. But you can't have half of the team without match practice.

Well, to be honest, since Grichting, Nkufo, Spycher, Magnin, Huggel, Frei and Streller retired there aren't any Swiss players over 28 in contention for the NT places (I'm not forgetting Yakin or Eggimann).

This "revolution" was kind of forced upon Hitzfeld considering there are no decent available older players while there are plenty of talented young guys.

I think Vitkieviez should have been called up as replacement for Barnetta - he is in great shape

well, maybe if Servette beat Basel next week, he'll be noticed

Berardi out as well, Mehmedi not in training

I'm ok with Emeghara-Xhaka-Shaqiri as played in training, but Xhaka only played 11mins so far this season. He is a very good passer and can become a good scorer. Hope he is trying to shoot from time to time.

There are not so many solutions for the OM position.

In midfield we have Barnetta, Costanzo, Margairaz and Stocker injured. Stocker is not a man for the central position anyway. Yakin not called up, but not so much missed either. Margairaz even less missed as he has never shown his full potential. If he becomes a regular scorer at FCZ after his injury, maybe he will get a second chance.

D.Degen, F.Frei, Padalino are not really destinated for the central OM position neither. Vitkieviez was not called up but is not playing so much in the center, either.

Oliver Buff could have been an alternative or Abdi. Or Gelson could take a more offensive part. Or why not Inler by using another player as DM?

yes, if only they would have let them played this season and excluded for the next  would be better for the swiss coefficient and better for Servette in the fight for a european spot... but this is the euro 2012 thread

for euro 2012, england wins in bulgaria and wales is leading 2-0 vs Montenegro, a victory vs Bulgaria and we're just 3 points behind Montenegro
