No one has been, currently is or ever will be Puyol.

This goal Sergi Roberto was the nearest to the striker .. not only is he slow to close him down .. he turns his back on the guy shooting !!

Never thought Puyol was the greatest defender ... but he was definitely a great leader.

Seriously .. how come this scrutiny never comes when Semedo has made mistakes ?

Seriously, he is not blocking that shot even if he doesn't turn around. You could argue he could have kept track of the striker better in the 2nd goal by sticking closer to him.

Yeah - when you make arguments like that, it's clear the discussion leads nowhere as understandings of what defending actually is differ too radically. :coffee:

Ok last point on this ...

Find last nights game / highlights and FF to 63 mins 56 secs and it's all there to see ...

Roberto is in the right wing position chasing a ball into their corner .. suddenly realised he's not getting the ball and he's out of position ( again ) ... they quickly break on us in the huge gap he's left them BUT he doesn't sprint back .... he plods back at Rakitic speed .. Arthur and even Pique get back into position much faster and more determinedly.. luckily their guy headed just wide ..

He was failed to get any kind of challenge or block for their late equaliser last night ... defend him if you can ..

Easy. I don't assume FBs that attack that much will be able to track back every time. FB is probably one of the most demanding positions physically if you expect them to constantly provide support in attack and then defend. You will run them ragged and the ones that can do it constantly, like Alba, Roberto Carlos are more like exceptions. You have to expect your system to cover for that. In this case, Rakitic has to cover for him and that's why he can't venture that deep up too often.

Coutinho and Umtiti said to be out till after international break. Not clear if Messi will be cleared before Betis. Dembele should be fine by Sunday. If Coutinho, Messi, and Dembele all missed we could start 3 forwards: Suarez, Munir, and Malcom; or more likely 2 of those 3 plus a 4th mid like Vidal, Rafinha, Alena, or Denis. The rest of the midfield is set: Busquets, Rakitic, Arthur; as is the defense MAtS, Alba, Lenglet, Pique, and Roberto (or Semedo).

Sounds like a plan .. a midfield of
    Rakitic / S Roberto / Paulinho would rival Zico / Falcao / Socretes ..

that midfield would run circles around two 65 year olds and a dead guy. no competition.

It's not really fair. Paulinho is midfield, attack, and defense.

The club couldn't get in touch with Dembele for 1:30 hours when he didn't show up for training being sick.

The media and the club are really putting the pressure on Dembele by releasing/leaking these stories.
