If Batista Meier develops similarly in Heerenveen and Fein prevails at PSV, these are further arguments for young German players to possibly take the next step in the Netherlands. I donot agree with all the players mentioned on the list, some are even laughable, but it at least has 10% of the list with Dutch talents (which arenot also all to my liking and some even wrongly ranked).

Eredivisie voedt niet alleen Oranje: ook 37 andere spelers op EK

Dries Mertens, Robin Gosens, Mason Mount, Alexander Isak en Oleksandr Zintsjenko. De eredivisie is vanaf vrijdag overal op het EK. Bij Oranje natuurlijk, maar daarnaast belandden 37 andere EK-gangers via de Nederlandse velden op het eindtoernooi.

Yvon Mvogo (PSV, Zwitserland)
Van de vijf spelers die het hele voorbije seizoen voor een eredivisieclub voetbalden, noteerde Yvon Mvogo (27) de meeste optredens. De door PSV van RB Leipzig gehuurde doelman kwam 33 competitieduels in actie. Bij Zwitserland lijkt hij echter genoegen te moeten nemen met een reserverol, achter Yann Sommer, een andere ervaren keeper. Mvogo maakt zich op voor zijn tweede eindtoernooi, nadat hij op het WK in 2018 ook als stand-in fungeerde. Zwitserland begint het EK zaterdag tegen Wales.

Tomas Suslov (FC Groningen, Slowakije)
Hij werd vorig jaar al de jongste debutant ooit in het Slowaakse nationale elftal en gaat op 19-jarige leeftijd nu ook zijn eerste eindtoernooi beleven. Tomas Suslov groeide in het seizoen bij FC Groningen en stelde daarmee ook zijn EK-ticket veilig. Een basisplaats ligt niet in de lijn der verwachting, maar een invalbeurt tegen Polen, Zweden of Spanje is voor de technisch vaardige middenvelder zeker niet uitgesloten.

Aké uitzondering
Bondscoach Frank de Boer haalde meer dan de helft van zijn Oranje-selectie uit de eredivisie. Zes internationals speelden voor Ajax (Quincy Promes voor de winterstop), twee keer zoveel als PSV, Feyenoord en AZ aan Nederlands elftal-spelers afleverden. Michal Sadílek (Tsjechië) en Halil Dervisoglu begonnen het afgelopen seizoen bij respectievelijk PSV en FC Twente. Daarmee komt het totaal aan EK-gangers die vorig seizoen één of meerdere wedstrijden in de eredivisie speelden op twintig. Van de 25 overgebleven Oranje-spelers, was slechts één speler nooit actief voor een Nederlandse werkgever: Nathan Aké.

Thomas Lam (PEC Zwolle, Finland)
Thomas Lam (27), zoon van een Finse moeder en een Nederlandse vader, maakte vrijwel de hele cyclus deel uit van de Finse selectie. Hoewel hij geen groot aandeel had in de kwalificatie, rekent bondscoach Markku Kanerva ook tijdens het eerste eindtoernooi van zijn land op de verdedigende middenvelder van PEC Zwolle. Het is voor Lam te hopen dat hij in Kopenhagen (tegen Denemarken) en Sint-Petersburg (versus Rusland en België) speeltijd krijgt. Zo kan de transfervrije Amsterdammer zich deze zomer wellicht ergens in de kijker spelen.

Orkun Kökçü (Feyenoord, Turkije)
Net als Lam en Suslov debuteert ook Orkun Kökçü op een eindtoernooi. De 20-jarige spelmaker van Feyenoord maakt deel uit van een getalenteerde Turkse lichting, die morgen bij de EK-aftrap outsider Italië hoopt te verrassen. Kökçü neemt in het Stadio Olimpico van Rome plaats op de bank. Speeltijd gloort wel, aangezien de middenvelder in de voorbije oefeninterlands als invaller binnen de lijnen kwam. Kökçü komt in de poulefase ook het Zwitserland van Mvogo en Wales met Gareth Bale tegen.

Róbert Bozeník (Feyenoord, Slowakije)
Kan Róbert Bozeník (21) op zijn eerste EK alsnog aantonen dat hij de ideale spits is voor Feyenoord en de nieuwe trainer Arne Slot? Dan moet hij wel speeltijd krijgen. Na een basisplaats in het oefenduel met Bulgarije ontbrak Bozeník voor de generale repetitie in de wedstrijdselectie van de Slowaken. Daardoor lijkt de kans groot dat de aanvaller bij zijn nationale ploeg, net als na zijn enkelblessure het afgelopen seizoen bij Feyenoord, moet hopen op invalbeurten.

37 keer ex-eredivisie; 17 keer ex-KKD
Wie de selectie van andere EK-deelnemers doorspit, komt in totaal 37 spelers tegen die recent of eerder hun centen als voetballer verdienden in Nederland. Sterker nog: de ere- en eerste divisie bleken in sommige gevallen een springplank naar de top. Oekraïner Zintsjenko (PSV) en de Engelse Mason Mount (Vitesse) troffen elkaar eind vorige maand nog in de CL-finale. De Deense oud-Ajacieden Christian Eriksen, Nicolai Boilesen en Kasper Dolberg, de Zweedse spitsen Alexander Isak en Marcus Berg, voormalige Twente-aanvallers Marko Arnautovic en Enes Ünal; ze zijn vanaf morgen allemaal te bewonderen op het EK.

Sommigen voor het eerst, anderen voor het laatst. Bij België is het eredivisiegehalte nog altijd hoog. Jan Vertonghen, Thomas Vermaelen, Toby Alderweireld (ex-Ajax), Dries Mertens (ex-PSV) en Nacer Chadli (ex-Twente) beginnen aan hun vierde of vijfde eindtoernooi. Bijzonder: laatstgenoemden begonnen in Nederland bij AGOVV. Van de eerste divisie naar het EK; ook Robin Gosens kan daarover meepraten. Zes jaar geleden debuteerde hij in het betaald voetbal voor FC Dordrecht. In 2021 staat de linksback met Duitsland op het EK. En zo waren zeventien niet-Nederlandse EK-gangers ooit actief in de Keuken Kampioen Divisie.

Antony Matheus dos Santos – beter bekend als Antony – gaat voor naar verluidt 95 miljoen euro van Ajax naar Manchester United, de club waar zijn voormalige trainer Erik ten Hag coach is. Dat bedrag zou via bonussen kunnen oplopen naar 100 miljoen euro. Daarmee is de 22-jarige Braziliaan de duurste speler ooit uit de Eredivisie. Wat betekent zo’n transfer in sportief, juridisch, historisch, commercieel en psychologisch opzicht?
Pierre van Hooijdonk, oud-voetballer:
„Het verschil tussen de Eredivisie en de Premier League is enorm groot. De laatste jaren zijn er voetballers van Ajax geweest zoals Davy Klaassen, Donny van de Beek en Daley Blind, die het in Engeland niet waar hebben gemaakt. En ik denk dat Cody Gakpo van PSV nu ook nog tekort zou komen voor Manchester United. Dat komt mede doordat de selecties veel groter zijn. Bij topclubs is de concurrentie enorm. Je moet er eigenlijk direct staan. Virgil van Dijk en Georginio Wijnaldum hebben het gered bij Liverpool, maar speelden wel eerst bij andere Britse clubs.

„Toch denk ik dat Antony alles heeft om te slagen bij Manchester United. Hij zal even de tijd nodig hebben om zich aan te passen, maar hij heeft iets wat anderen niet hebben. Je zou het een vleugje Neymar kunnen noemen. Het is een uitdagende speler met een versnelling. Hij voetbalt alsof hij in de favela staat. Met een enorme wil om te winnen. Antony weet het straatvoetbal te vertalen naar de effectiviteit van het profvoetbal. Al met al heeft hij als Braziliaans international een zeer gunstig profiel. Als je al op jonge leeftijd tot de Seleção behoort, dan heb je toch een streepje voor. Bovendien is Antony een voetballer die niet afhankelijk is van anderen. Hij speelt zijn eigen spel. Wat dat betreft is hij een beetje vergelijkbaar met Luis Suárez [die in 2011 van Ajax naar Liverpool ging, red.].

„Veel fans zullen Antony in de armen sluiten. Anderen zullen hem verafschuwen en met een kanon op hem schieten. In Engeland houden ze niet van fopduiken en aanstellerig gedrag. Dat zal hij snel zien.”

Juridisch
Tim Wilms, sport- en arbeidsrechtadvocaat:
„Voetballers hebben in het arbeidsrecht een uitzonderlijke positie in vergelijking met andere werknemers. Zij zijn uitgezonderd van de zogenoemde ‘ketenregeling’. Dit betekent dat voetballers in principe niet beperkt zijn in het aantal contracten voor bepaalde tijd. Die uitzondering hebben zij met toestemming van de minister, net als kunstenaars, onderwijzers en tv-makers. Hun positie is het gevolg van het internationaal erkende transfersysteem. Het is daarom lastig voor voetballers om contracten tussentijds te beëindigen.

„Spelers die onder hun contract uit willen, zoals Antony, hebben drie opties. Ze kunnen gaan onderhandelen met hun werkgever over een afkoopsom, ze kunnen bij de KNVB-arbitragecommissie een verzoek indienen tot ontbinding van hun arbeidsovereenkomst of ze kunnen eenzijdig hun contract opzeggen.

„Ik heb meerdere profspelers en -clubs bijgestaan en in veruit de meeste gevallen gebeurt het eerste. Verrassend genoeg zijn er weinig voorbeelden van voetballers die naar de arbitragecommissie stapten, zoals Jip Molenaar van Telstar, die door de nieuwe trainer op een zijspoor werd gezet [hij won, red.]. Alleen al door daarmee te dreigen kun je als voetballer druk op de ketel zetten. Bij mijn weten zijn er geen Eredivisiespelers die eenzijdig hun contract hebben opgezegd, wat onder meer tot een schorsing en een schadevergoeding van de FIFA kan leiden.”

Historisch
Jurryt van de Vooren, sporthistoricus:
„De overstap van Antony zou passen in een langere trend in het voetbal. Die trend is begonnen met het zogenaamde Bosman-arrest, in 1995, als gevolg waarvan het transfersysteem werd afgeschaft. Door dat arrest kregen transfervrije spelers meer vrijheid. Maar spelers die afwillen van een lopend contract, zijn juist afhankelijker geworden van hun club – zeker nu de bedragen zo toenemen. Ze voelen zich gevangene door die hoge transfersom. Uiteindelijk hebben clubs, denk ik, meer voordeel van het Bosman-arrest dan spelers.

„Honderd miljoen is een hoog bedrag, maar tegenwoordig verdienen clubs gigantische bedragen aan de shirts van populaire spelers, zéker als die uit een land komen waar voetbal groot is, zoals Antony, die uit Brazilië komt. Ik voorspel dat zijn shirt binnen no time in Braziliaanse winkelketens hangt.”

Commercieel
Bob van Oosterhout, sportmarketeer:
„Het is natuurlijk een astronomisch bedrag. Je kunt je serieus afvragen of hij dat waard is. Paniekvoetbal is misschien een groot woord, maar Manchester staat onder druk: het gaat al jaren niet goed, er moet iets gebeuren. En de échte toppers, de allergrootsten der aarde zoals Neymar of Mbappé, die zijn onhaalbaar. Die liggen vast en kosten een veelvoud van 100 miljoen. Dus dan moet je als club gaan kijken naar toppers in spe.

„Zelf ben ik nooit zo’n fan geweest van Antony, ik vind zelfs dat hij een beetje een vervelende uitstraling heeft. Maar je kunt niet ontkennen dat het een topper is. Voor zulke spelers kom je naar het stadion.

„Manchester United hoopt natuurlijk dat hij zich op sportief vlak terugbetaalt. En als ze weer Champions League gaan halen, dan levert dat al een aardig gedeelte van die transfersom op. Maar vergis je niet, je koopt met Antony ook een international uit Brazilië. De club heeft al een wereldwijde uitstraling, maar die wordt nu in Zuid-Amerika versterkt. Als hij de revelatie is die ze hopen, levert dat zoveel inkomsten op. Denk aan al die shirtjes met zijn naam erop die je verkoopt in Brazilië, maar mogelijk ook duurdere uitzendrechten in Zuid-Amerika en misschien trek je wel een Braziliaans bedrijf als nieuwe sponsor aan. Het is een combinatie van heel veel dingen.

„Aan de ene kant zijn zeker de grote clubs keiharde bedrijven, die zaken tot drie cijfers achter de komma uitrekenen voordat ze een keuze maken. Maar aan de andere kant is het opportunisme troef. Dat maakt voetbal zo interessant.”

Psychologisch
Afke van de Wouw, sportpsycholoog:
„Hoe een voetballer omgaat met zo’n transfer is heel persoonlijk. Aan de ene kant is het een enorme bevestiging dat een club jou wil hebben, voor zó veel geld. Dat is kicken. Maar tegelijkertijd kan het ook druk geven: nu moet je laten zien dat je het waard bent, nu moet je scoren.

„Manchester United is ook een club die veel meer aandacht genereert dan Ajax, dus Antony staat nog meer in de schijnwerpers. En een transfer kost sowieso veel energie: een nieuwe club, in dit geval ook een nieuw land. Pas je binnen een cultuur? Kun je met de trainer overweg?

„Voordeel voor Antony is: Ten Hag wil hem graag hebben, dus ze zullen een goede relatie hebben. Dat scheelt enorm. Het is sowieso fijn om de coach te kennen als je op een nieuwe plek begint. Je bent gewend aan de manier van training, feedback, de teambesprekingen, de manier waarop hij Engels spreekt – ze zijn natuurlijk allebei geen native speaker. Dat zijn kleine dingen, maar het maakt wel uit.”
