A midfield problem for @ManUtd on Sunday. "McTominay, Pogba out. Matic fit but maybe not matchfit." Rojo also ruled out.— Simon Stone (@sistoney67) November 22, 2019 Hope Garner can get sometime on Sunday.
The team selection I would go for this one would be: -------------------------Dave ------AWB---Lindelöf---Maguire---Williams --------------------AP------Fred ----------James---Lingard---Rashford -----------------------Martial Could see Ole going with AY at LB and Mata in the hole. I would play both of them in the Astana game, as the experienced presence in a team that is sure to be full of young players. Plus, Williams is just better than AY and Lingard gets the nod because of work rate and athleticism, which will be needed vs Sheffield. The slower pace and the need to have someone who can unlock defenses, make Mata the better option for Kazakhstan also. Not going to be easy regardless: Sheffield can play obviously but their positive style might suit our counter attacking game. Despite the injuries we really have to make sure we get all 3pts (same vs Villa), with some tough league games coming after that.
Ole has confirmed that he is back in training, but still training away from the main group (along with Bailly). He also mentioned that both have stepped up their recovery and are not far away (from being available again). Garner should be the one making the matchday squad for midfield depth. There's a U23 game today, so we'll find out if he has a chance to make it Sunday, if he's kept out of it.
If nobody care about Chaz Striker watching his first match in two months if Garner plays I may watch my first match in two months.
I'm really intrigued to see how we approach this midfield issue tomorrow. The situation gets amplified if Maguire is out. Maguire, in the absence of Pogba has been probably our most important player in terms of progressing the ball. He's likely in our top 3 progressive passers and he's the leagues best progressive ball carrier from the CB position. We're going to struggle without him if he's not fit, moreso if we have a makeshift midfield. I'd be tempted to go to a 433 for this match and play Fred, AP and Garner in midfield but I've got a feeling we won't see that.
Levitt trained with the first team this morning - maybe a role on the bench given our midfield injuries. https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/man-utd-latest-news-levitt-17305650
United currently sit 10th in the league.Victory tomorrow would move us 5th place, 7 points off top 4 (unless Chelsea turn this around) Defeat would leave us stuck in 10th, 6 points off the relegation zone. #mufc— Stretford Paddock (@StretfordPaddck) November 23, 2019
3-4-3 or something similar by the looks of it. The setup makes sense against this Sheffield team. Guessing that Jones got the nod ahead of Tuanzebe with the latter lacking match fitness. Great to see Williams keeping his place also. Sheffield United XI: Moore, Basham, Jagielka, O'Connell, Baldock, Norwood, Stevens, Lundstram, Fleck, McGoldrick, Mousset.
Back to using the 352 in order to protect our lack of midfield. It’s not a bad move considering how weak we would be with a center 3 of AP, Fred, and Matic/Jesse. Perfect formation for Williams considering how he likes to bomb down the flank. But its a big ask for him physically as hes going to be required to cover a ton of ground.
Ole has explained Williams's selection by mentioning he did not find any reason to leave him out today. He added that this stadium will test him and he's got a good opportunity to show his mentality, since his temperament is one of his strengths. Bravo! There's no reason for him to be behind AY at least, going forward in the pecking order at LB. 0-3 at best. The opponent today may not match up well against us on paper, but their tactics will be a challenge for us, a squad that has badly underperformed so far this season.
