As parallel project to the 'unofficial' European all-star teams of the season (1971-1980) I collected how often a player was selected for the PFA first division team of the season.

For the 1969 - 1973 years I used the Rothmans poll among writers. For this poll also players in Scotland were eligible; I replaced those by the best positioned English league player.

If a player is listed in boldface then he is inducted in the 'English Football Hall of Fame'. If a player is listed underlined then he was mentioned in the '100 League Legends' list, compiled by the Football League (published in 1998).

I noticed you put G.Best with 3 seasons from 70-72! Was not his 68 the best ever season?
I was surprised with Bergkamp only 1 season... I think he got shared with (many good strikers at his time) Owen, Cole, Shearer, Nistelrooy and of course Henry

I wonder why Schmeichel only ever won one. He was the only player in England who was considered the very best in the world in their position (in the 90's) and this esteem lasted his entire tenure at Man U.

Interesting that George Best only had an impact in the readers poll in the last two seasons of the 1960s and surprisingly Bobby Charlton managed to outperformd Best in his best ever season (1967-68).

In that season when Manchester City won the championship (1967-68), no City player is among the Top 10 of the readers poll, yet the following season, Francis Lee of Manchester City is at the top of the poll.

Ron Springett and Peter Bonetti the two highest-ranked goalkeepers (surprisingly no Gordon Banks).
