I've been very sceptical about Karanka. But it's not really true that he banished the youngsters from the side. Only Worrall really saw a reduction in gametime. Part down to being 'dropped', part down to being injured. Cash + Brereton played just as much as they had before.
It could be, but also you can count Dowell there, who really thrived under Warburton, but after Karanka arrived, he became a different, much worse player.
In fact, I think itll be much more beneficial for Brereton if he plays less games but it's in a better team as opposed to another season of flogging himself up top on his own for 40 games.
It's understandable to have your concerns Hussar. There aren't many coaches around now willing to back young players properly that is for sure. Agree with the above JRSG. One of Brereton's strengths is his movement off the ball (making little runs in behind) & we finally have a #10 now of quality. For much of Dowell's time as #10 - Brereton was playing #7 unfortunately but also understandable as he he was gaining experience. But he is a #9 all day long. I think I also had concerns about Karanka before he first joined but so far so good. A positive I've seen this pre-season besides the involvement of other younger players is how he has dealt with Ryan Yates (1997) who looks the next one to be making big strides. His loans last year couldn't have been more perfect but it seemed like there was no room in the squad for him and Karanka kept saying we got to think what is best for him and a loan to Rotherham looked a formality. But his form this pre-season has been such that Karanka looks to be keeping him as 1 of our 4 centre-mids and going to flog Bridcutt.
Probably deserves more recognition but Luca Ashby-Hammond really impressed me at the u17 Euros like he always has done. Has recently been with Fulham first team. Our best young keeper prospect after the under 21 group of Gunn, Henderson & Woodman.
I agree with this. I think hes the best young keeper after the u21 group. Interested to see how he gets along
Ladies and gentleman, it's Mumba time! ⏰16-year-old Bali Mumba starts for the Lads this afternoon against @CAFCofficial.#SAFC #HawayTheLads pic.twitter.com/hmy60hiwBu— Sunderland AFC (@SunderlandAFC) August 4, 2018
Angel gomes a joy to watch in man u’s u23 draw with fulham the other day https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.da...-Jesse-Lingard-U23-highlights-video-viral/amp
He had a great 20 minutes in another u23 game I saw recently. Almost scored a beauty that came back off the bar and nearly slotted in an amazing through ball. Still struggles with his physical deficit but once the game opens up his ability shines.
He spent just under a season at Leicester, went there as a 15 year-old from Lincoln, then went back. Bit weird.
Ha Indeed. I was dubious of him joining before he joined for multiple reasons from his boro spell. I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt because back end of last season he did still use our young players. But that post above certainly makes me look stupid for giving him the benefit of the doubt. Hope Brereton rips it up at Blackburn.
Arvin Appiah is on the bench for us tonight for the first time. Of relevance to this thread and still only 17.

I had him in midfield and then moved him back with the thinking he might have to play a cover role in required.
