England can win the Women's World Cup and Colombia's victory over France proved the tournament is wide open, says forward Toni Duggan.

The Lionesses face Colombia - the group's lowest-ranked side - in their final group game on Wednesday.

"The Colombia win didn't change our goal. We still want to win this World Cup and we still can," said Duggan.

"Colombia are tough but that's the beauty of the World Cup - everyone can beat everyone."

England began their campaign with a 1-0 loss to France, who are third in the world, but then recovered with a 2-1 win over 25th-ranked Mexico on Saturday in Moncton.

They now face a Colombia side who, despite being 28th in the world, sit top of Group F after drawing 1-1 with Mexico in their opening match and then producing the shock of the tournament with a 2-0 victory over France.

With three teams progressing to the second round from four of the six groups in the World Cup, the battle to qualify remains wide open with one match to play.

Sixth-ranked England will probably need at least a point against Colombia to be sure of their qualification.

A good laugh. Kirby's misplaced kick that got her being labelled a mini Messi. If England was in Africa, they wouldnt get to Semi finals of the AWC.

You can't be serious. They played quite well after they got going. No way they would lose to an African team except maybe Nigeria. Carney is right though. Almost any team can win this Cup. The game is more competitive with more parity than EVER before.

It is not a mispalced kick and Kirby is obviously far from being Messi, but she is a good kid with potential.

Kirby looked really good since last year's friendly with Sweden. Was wondering why she still this season playing division 2 for Reading? Wouldn't a div 1 or richer club try to pick her up by now?

and any news on Jody Taylor?(will she get to play?) I know she suffered a recent injury but she's still on the roster

Reading gave her a good contract, she trains with the men's academy on a daily basis.
Her family is in Reading and (probably) her partner as well.

Apparently Nobbs is injured, Taylor status still unknown.

Plus Kirby has the extra motivation of playing for her mom who passed away.

The winner in group F plays the runner up in Group E so no chance England plays Germany or USA in round 1 if they win the group. They'd likely play Costa Rica or Spain. They can beat both those teams.

I mean't group F winner takes on Germany in the quarter finals(if both teams win their 1st round games). They keep saying US takes on third place F in the 1st round(so best to avoid 3rd place). The safest bet is F group runners up ; they take on Norway(not that strong of a team) in the 1st round, then the winner of the Switzerland/Canada game(two also questionable strength teams), and after those two games, on to the semis

but saying this, Colombia is in the drivers seat; they can bunker down & play for the tie. while France should be able to win against a Mexican team that is in a bit of a disarray and would need to open up(leave themselves exposed) if they want to win and move to the next round.

Meanwhile, England, would need a win to secure either 1st or 2nd place.

Yeah, I expect England to come out strong and win against Columbia. Worst case would be a tie.

Well, you were right about that. I didn't see this kind of game from them, but they did come out firing and playing fairly well. Props to them.

    And you, too.

So right now, it looks like England has a good shot at the semis and then maybe the Final. What happens in soccer-mad England if the women's team is suddenly on the doorstep of a World Cup victory? Does it take the country by storm?

Come on. This England team could definitely beat Nigeria and Cameroon.

I was thinking about that too and I think for sure YES! IF England gets to even the semis or quarters more people will take notice and you'll see those massive big screens set up like they have in the men's World Cup. All the pubs and bars will get into too.

Imagine a USA/England final? You could get a viewing audience of over a BILLION worldwide and I bet it would shatter soccer ratings in America!

Well England proved a point and gave it to Columbia and got the coveted 2nd place spot. Once I saw the round of 16 bracket I knew that it would be better to get 2nd as there wasn't much of a bonus to get 1st since the winner would also face off against a 2nd place team (South Korea). I don't think England will win the World Cup plus only one or 2 players said they could. I think with the way they attacked in the 1st half they can play with anybody and probably should've scored more goals against Columbia.

Agreed that will be tough but they can beat Norway and make it to the quarters. Then they will play the winner of Brazil/Australia?

They can beat Norway, but so can Norway. I think Canada v. Switzerland is almost a toss up because the Swiss can stab you in the back when you don't realise it because they attack well. Canada has been underwhelming, but will have a strong support group. As for England beating Brazil/Aussies I think they can because Brazil has been underwhelming as well, while Australia has done well for themselves.

the winner of England vs Norway takes on whoever comes up on top of the Canada/Switzerland game. Norway came through the weakest group at the wc. Due to injuries, their missing their two best players from euro 2013. I think their beatable. If England goes through; Canada get the home advantage, but they've have a tough time scoring(only 2 goals in 3 games). They beat England in a friendly about a week prior to the wc. But England wasn't playing Kirby, Greenwood, or Taylor in that game. Glad to see that Jody Taylor got to see action. Hopefully she'll play more, I don't think she'll start, but I got the feeling Kirby looked good vs the latin style of a slower possession game, but might just have a harder time against the more physical as well large Norwegians. Meanwhile Taylor at one point was the leading scorer in the Swedish league, than the Australian one as well, and darn close to the top of the scorer's table in the nwsl.

This England team is a dangerous team to play against.
They don't have to rely on a mega superstar to save them (much like Spain relies on Vero)
This team can win games by a total team effort. They are a a well balanced team.
They are good in the air, they don't make too many errors, and they are not too bad at finishing.
Right now, their finishing is much better than the USWNT's finishing in front of goal.

England has height, physicality, and just enough speed (they are certainly faster than Sweden, collectively).
They are on the easier side of the bracket. Norway is an opponent they can beat. It'll be a close game.

I personally think England can beat Canada. I know that's an even match-up when those two teams play in friendlies, and this game is in Canada, but right now England is finishing their opportunities better than Canada. They don't have to rely on one player to save them (Canada might have to with Sinclair in that game). Carney, Aluko, Duggan, and Kirby can all score. Even Houghton. Jill Scott on set pieces. Fara Williams on penalty kicks. They have a balanced team, very similar to Japan's balance in their starting XI in 2011, with the exception of not having Sawa. Miyama and Sawa in 2011 > than any duo England has, but England's 3rd-11th best players are just as balanced as Japan's 3rd-11th best in 2011.
