    Election Day

By Bill Archer on May 12, 2016 at 7:20 AM
Ever since the fateful day when the FBI dropped the net on CONCACAF President Alfredo Hawitt, that luckless, friendless, egregiously corrupt Confederation has been without an executive.

They did of course try to Shanghai Mexico's Justino Compean who, by statute, was "the next man up", and there's probably no truth to the rumor that when they passed him the gavel he jumped up from the table and ran screaming from the room, not wanting to be the answer to a future trivia question regarding who the fourth consecutive CONCACAF President to do jail time in the US was.

Anyway, after getting turned down by everybody including the lady who sells coffee at the stand in the hotel lobby, they decided to limp along with a kind of ad hoc committee arrangement for which there is absolutely no Constitutional authority whatsoever but as long as nobody questioned it in court it wasn't a problem.

FIFA certainly didn't object. They're all busy trying to stay out of jail themselves.

But no more; sometime today, down in Mexico City, CONCACAF will elect a brand spanking new head felon.

    I mean, President.

Sadly for those of us who find rampant corruption, bribery and theft eminently amusing, the "Jack Warner Is My Hero" candidate, Caribbean Union President Gordon Derrick from the lovely tropical paradise island of Flyspeck, who was the runaway favorite, was declared unacceptable by FIFA and will not be on the ballot.

No one is saying exactly why, although he was caught up in the big Warner/bin Hammam Cash-A-Palooza at the Port of Spain Hyatt and had to pay a small fine. Maybe that's the reason, maybe there's something more, we don't know. Derrick is making the usual mouth noises about be railroaded by the North Americans and taking his case to the CAS and all of that but it will come to nothing.

A shame; ever since he took over the CFU from Uncle Jack back in 2012 - he was Sepp Blatter's hand picked man - he's made increasingly obnoxious statements about how the Caribbean Islands have the votes to do whatever they want in CONCACAF so North and Central America better get used to the idea that all the money belongs to them.

He would clearly have been entertaining, if nothing else.
