    actually, since Newell was a person, it should be DO.

    in portuguese we hardly, if ever, use the preoposition DE with the article A or O before a city´s name, but we do it with people´s names.

    "Who are they"?
    "They are friends of Clara"
    "Where are they from?"
    "They are from Porto Alegre"

    -Quem são eles?
    -Eles são amigos DA Clara
    -De onde eles são?
    -Eles são DE Porto Alegre.

    Newell's Old Boys

    "Guris do Newell", or "Chapas do Newell", etc.

    (not sure about the rest of Brazil, but here in Porto Alegre and around, we call friends as "velho", a contraction of "old friend (velho amigo)". So it would not be entirely wrong to translate as "Velhos do Newell".)
