I’m not sure but I believe that is Antonio Cestarollo. The only Italian born player ever to suit up for the Quakes in the NASL/WSA/MLS era..,
From all the info I found, Cestarollo was officially #19, although that is not always an accurate stat when viewing photos, as jersey numbers were often changed for specific games or times of the season. There is no #23 listed for 1979. LeRoy Spann wore it in '78, and this is obviously not LeRoy Spann.
Yes but that picture was from when he appeared in a preseason game at PAL Stadium in which he scored. He never played a regular season game but when the team picture was taken at West Valley College, he was #19. https://www.nasljerseys.com/Players/C/Cestarollo.Antonio.htm I heard two stories on why he didn’t play. One was because he needed a green card and two he was injured but he kept asking Easy Perez to tell the coach to play him. Unfortunately , in 1979, the year of all the German players in the squad , coach Peter Stubbe has his favorites. I recall Gabbo had a bias or beef with one Italian born player who tried out the year before but never signed.
This photo is from 1978 when Peter Ressel played for the Quakes. He was at Chicago in 1979. Also in the photo is Volker Fass (4) who was a defender for the Stompers in Oakland. I never knew the exact circumstances, but in mid-season 1978, the Quakes made a trade of John Rowlands to the Stompers for Fass. Fass was generally useless for either team and went back to Germany at season's end, where he subsequently had a decent career in the German 2nd division for the most part. In 1979, Rowlands was back with the Quakes.
Late to the party here, but... wow, I'm surprised at the confusion on this one. I recognized this player immediately. It's Geoff Davies!
Thanks for confirming, Falvo (at least I think you're agreeing with me?). Davies impressed me in '77, which is one of the years that my wife (then girlfriend) and I had season tickets.
