Falvo, love the old pics. First game my Dad took me to was a friendly against Pumas at Spartan. I think Mirko was in goal for the first Half. Ivanow in the second...been hooked ever since.
Oh thanks. I remember the UNAM Pumas played Diego Maradona's Napoli in 1985 at Spartan Stadium after the NASL folded but I can't remember them coming to San Jose. Here is a ticket stub from 1974 Quakes vs Club America........ Club America (Mexico) at San Jose Earthquakes Date: June 11, 1974 Earthquakes lost 2-1 Attendance: 7,418Goals: Earthquakes-Archie Roboostoff Club America-Alejandro Ojeda, Enrique Borja
Thanks, It must have been CA, it was definitely 1974...I remember it was a top division Mexican side. The ticket price is hysterical!
When the Quakes played CA, they were barely a month old.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1974_San_Jose_Earthquakes_season
I thought it was Chivas that played Napoli at Spartan Stadium in 1985. I could be wrong, but it was a very popular Mexican club, that I do remember and Chivas is arguably the most popular Mexican club in the San Jose area.
Just had the biggest sense of deja vu looking at that program. I thought it was a preseason game, but first month is pretty darn close...nice to get the facts straight after all these years, thanks!
"Second Leg [Apr 5, Spartan Stadium, San Jose] Pumas UNAM (Mexico) 2-1 Napoli (Italy)" My memory has sure gone to hell in a hand basket, as they say. I was at the game and here we are, 30+ years later, and I am thinking I saw Chivas. Oh well.... On a side note, I do have a story about the event. Members of the San Jose Seahawks Rugby Club were hired as "ushers" for that game. The promoters knew it would be crowded (which it was) and there likely would be a lot of people there who might be unfamiliar with the Spartan Stadium seating layout, so they wanted some extra help getting spectators to their correct seats. As it turned out, even with all the Seahawk guys, in their yellow "Event Staff" windbreakers, there were many people who did not pay any attention to the seat numbers on their tickets, creating several confrontations around the stadium. Several of those involved had already been drinking quite a bit before they ever came inside the stadium, so it did not take much to get a scuffle started. When the Seahawks were hired, it was made clear that they were NOT security...they were there only to help get people to their correct seats. When the fights started, suddenly management started calling on the guys in the yellow "Event Staff" windbreakers to take care of things. At first, they did, but then, as the game got started, there were more fights here and there....many, if not most, of the Seahawks removed their windbreakers and either found a place to sit or just left. About the only ones who stayed were probably the guys who also worked security at the Saddle Rack.
If I recall correctly, because of the jersey mix up, Guido Polverino of Guido's Pizzeria lent his Italia 78 team jerseys to Napoli. At the time the NASL folded in 1985, Italia was a top amateur team in the local Peninsula Soccer League and featured many former local top college, youth and pros.
I don't remember if I was ever successful uploading this picture. Anyway, this was the wall in my room when I was still living at home in SJ. You can probably even guess the year, or not.
