I hope people have been watching Wijnaldum since he came back from that nasty infection. He's been Liverpool's best player. So intelligent, strong on the ball, and his off the ball work goes completely under the radar. There was a statistical analysis of how Liverpool play with specific players on the field and it shows they suffer defensively in a big way when Wijnaldum isn't there; he doesn't necessarily tackle or intercept a ton but his cutting of space, intelligence in possession and industry are very important. Not to mention his ability in transition.

Next season he should be first choice along with either Henderson/Chamberlain and Keita of a team that could challenge for the PL and CL. This season he was the engine that turned the 2nd game around against City and absolutely destroyed Roma in the first game.

Such an underrated player. If only he had a bit more confidence in his skills he could be World Class, if he isn't already. He's not unlike Modric (though more defensive and safer in nature), who took a while for the world to truly appreciate.

Modric is far superior in ball skill and handling speed. Wijnaldum's chief drawback is his passing.

I dont think so. Klopp has rotated the midfield throughout the season in the bit to let the midfield players to groom in all departments but still they dont have true no 9 and this is where they are looking to invest this season. With the arrival of Ox, his set up have changed to playing with 2 attacking and 1 central where as before he used to go with BTB with either henderson or wijnaldum.

When coutinho was at Liverpool he played the dual role coming inside from the left. He pretty much covered both the winger and midfield role and which further meant the midfield could drop back and maintain certain degree of attacking line.

Now with Mane on the left, he is pretty much more direct than coutinho and this is where they could use a true number 9 to bring Firmino more into the game.

The second leg vs Roma was a big question in the midfield and Oxs quickness and fluidity was defintely missing. Its true wijnaldum brings a certain aspect to the game but it also pretty much comes down to who your oponent is. Now if you look at Real, I dont think he will have much chance against the likes of Casemiro and if what happend vs Roma in 2 leg happens vs Real, they will pay the price.

I think you need to rewatch those games, and also the whole season. Are you a Liverpool fan? I've watched every single game this season, and last. Outside of when Wijnaldum was sick he's not just been great he's their best midfielder overall. Also Modric isn't 'far superior' in ball skill and handling speed, he just often plays a more offensive role and plays with more confidence. Wijnaldum has shown many times already this season his ability to use his speed, agility and ball control. His first touch is incredible. Look at some of the plays he made even just in the CL this season. Wijnaldum also scored the decider that put Liverpool through against Roma, btw, in the 2nd leg. Also in the first leg, before Ox injured himself, Liverpool were struggling to control the midfield and as soon as Wijnaldum came on the game changed completely. The same thing happened against City -- as soon as Wijnaldum turned it on he was the one that drove Liverpool's midfield forward and snuffed out City's attempt to win the tie.

Also that analysis of Coutinho is wrong, but I don't have time to do a write-up atm. But basically the team had to carry Coutinho defensively, and especially when he was playing in midfield (when Mane was playing on the left and not injured). Firmino has been absolutely fantastic and he roams all over the place -- they don't need a true #9 as Firmino is one of the best in the world, while Salah takes up the role of a traditional poacher drifting in from the right and usually being the highest player. Wijnaldum is crucial to Klopp's team in the way he facilitates transitions and his intelligence on the field which allows a lot more freedom to the rest of the team. It's no small wonder that the team's defensive record with Wijnaldum playing vs. when he is not is much, much better. He is their best midfielder.

Wijnaldum will have no problem against Real's midfield. In fact, he'll be the standout midfielder once again. As he has been in almost every big game he's played for Liverpool.

How can you compare Modric and Wijnaldum guys? Modric is a thousand times better than him. Modric, you can compare him to Xavi, Iniesta or Pirlo. He is an artist.

from stats point of view AS Roma had more possession in both legs and dominated everything in the second leg. this concludes a lot things. you can be at the right place at the right time but stats prove otherwise.

secondly wijnaldum never plays week in and week out. he has got a sickness of being inconsistent in every second game. it would hard to call it from Liverpool point of view especially when he is coming of the bench more often but at NT it has has been a dominant feature.

I think somebody here has said this, his weakness is his inability to shoot from long range. Being said this , I think everyone knows he is more clinical inside the box than outside of the box.

  15. Last week's Voetbal International (so not this week's) had Willems in their European team of the week. Has anyone seen what he did to deserve that?

  16. Well, in the German Cup Final Willems an Jonathan de Guzman beat Bayern with 3-1.

Memphis Depay monster season in France's Ligue 1:

    19 goals (3rd top scorer)
    13 assists (tied 1st)

Plus 3 goals and 3 assists in Europa League.

Wow. What a difference a year, and a new home, make :geek::thumbsup: Early in the season, I thought a double-double (10 goals 10 assists) would have been a very successful season for him. What he achieved was well beyond anybody's expectation. Kudos to this kid.

Next season will be quite telling... are his numbers sustainable? Hopefully having a long layoff this summer will give him a head start, and not playing in the World Cup will motivate him mentally. Looks like Lyon will lose a big-time scorer, Nabil Fakir (transfer target of Liverpool and others).

  18. Would be nice if they get ManUnited in the CL and he personally shoots them down.

I read that Donk had a strong season.
I also watched a few Galatasary matches and he looked solid in Defensive Midfielder role it appeared.
Oranje call up would be deserved .

Memphis starts the new season with a fine... after failing to show up for pre-season on time. Gulp :x3:

Kongolo secured a move to Huddersfield. Good "stepping stone" for him, hopefully he can get regular playing time and establish himself, and who knows maybe a move to a bigger club in the future (see Van Dijk)

Cillessen is apparently allowed to leave Barcelona... this would be huge! It's a joke that Netherlands no. 1 is a bench-warmer.

Promes is another player I'd like to move to a new club (and a tougher league). He is due for new challenges.

After losing Kluivert, I hope Ajax can hold on their other prized assets (De Ligt, F. De Jong, and vd Beek), for the sake of their development and NT future.
