Look, I care not what private folk do in the privacy of their home (unless you chain your kids in the basement). I should have titled the thread differently: "Pressure the Crew to dump PapaJohn's?" would have been better. In scenario A: they dump them. An apparently racist guy gets dumped & we do not have our club associated with him or his company. That is a win. In scenario B: PSV backs the guy making racist comments. We can use it against him in Austin. Anything we can use to slow that train is a win. As to the merits of the story, the advertiser cutting ties has the best info and they are cutting ties. I would say that is a good barometer.
Just to reiterate, in recent months, the NFL replaced Papa John's with Pizza Hut as their official pizza sponsor. MLB suspended the PapaSlam promotion yesterday. The mayor of Jacksonville (a republican) stripped a gym of his name today. (See, anti-racism is non-political). The Crew and MLS should follow suit or have to answer for why not. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/11/business/papa-johns-racial-slur.html
As is your prerogative, ineffective and performative though it may be. The best boycotts are the ones in which nothing is risked. Tell me, how much Papa John's will you be forgoing?
Good for them. Let me know when they help bring about the end of the WoD and stop throwing people in cages for growing a plant. Or randomly searching brown people on the street. Or stop actual racism at all.
I love butter, but the amount that goes into Pizza Hut's crust is just too much. I can feel months coming off my life with each bite that I take. A tip to make Papa's pizza a little more edible is to order it well done.
Atlanta United has dumped Papa John's. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/papa-johns-dumped-by-sports-teams-schools-over-schnatter-comments/
MLS introduces the Dumped Sponsor rule which awards teams 2mil in salary cap if they break ties with an inconvenient sponsor.
Just got this e-mail. -------- This past week was the hardest week in my 22 years with Papa John's. I know the words of John Schnatter were offensive, and nothing pains me more than knowing they hurt you. To be clear, those words in no way represent my views or the values of our company. As the leader of Papa John's, I'm sorry. Racism and insensitive language - no matter the context - will not be tolerated at any level of our company. Period. Papa John's is not an individual. Papa John's is a pizza company with 120,000 corporate and franchise team members around the world. These are the people in your communities from all walks of life who work hard to provide you with better service and better pizza. These are your local owners and operators who do so much in your community. Still, you deserve actions, not just words, so here's what we're going to do about it: We're in the process of bringing in outside experts to help audit our company's culture and diversity and inclusion practices. This will allow us to identify our strengths and weaknesses. We will then set clear goals to do better. Our senior management team will be on the road, listening to our employees and franchisees and getting their feedback on a path to move forward. We'll be transparent with you along the way. We want you to hold us accountable. I will personally be leading this effort because there is nothing more important for Papa John's right now. We want to regain your trust, and we will work hard to earn it. I know this will take time. The entire team at Papa John's wants to thank you for your loyalty. We are only in business because of you. And it's our sincere wish that we'll continue to have the honor of serving you. Sincerely, Steve Ritchie CEO, Papa John's
Can some of these "outside experts" tell them how to improve their product into something resembling pizza?
Meh. 4700 locations. $1.78B in revenue. I’m sure they’ll fail on their own once Schnatter is gone. He single handedly built that business and his kids are going to starve. Another successful white guy is gone. On to the next.
