Why would you want to? Walk around all day making people look at your bones and cartilage? That’s f***ed up.
It's a lot easier being in an echo chamber. Go back to CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS and NBC and feel good that your world is unchanged. All Repubs and conservatives are racist, bigots........
If five different networks are under that impression (if you even agree with the premise to begin with), is it possible that maybe it’s based on something?
No, but they're all REALLY good at enabling racists and bigots in the name of lower taxes. Whatever it takes to get a few bucks...
We're obviously not in an echo chamber since we've got Tom and others here saying what they have. It continues to distress me, as a fan of both women's basketball and women's soccer, that so many men with sexist and homophobic attitudes pollute discussions of women's sports. I don't think that every Republican and conservative is a bigot. But even the ones who aren't are supporting bigoted political candidates and bigoted public policies. So, at a minimum, they are knowingly complicit in bigotry.
Yes! It is based on group speak. Right out of Orwell's 1984. They all agreed that: Trump the candidate would never get above 40%. Hillary was going to win in a land slide. When Trump won, they all agreed that: The stock market would never recover. Manufacturing jobs would never come back. For 2+ years they agreed it was "Russian Collusion". They have agreed many times on stories which turned out not to be true, because in their hatred for Trump, they don't always corroborate their information. Oh yeah, all of them agreeing is based on something. Trump hatred. TDS Trump derangement syndrome.
He said it was an interview. I already said I didn't really buy it, so I wasn't inclined to chase it down.
I'm clearly a conservative and have been a big fan of our WNT for a long time. Not only do I root for Megan Rapinoe and have for years, but I think she's clearly a good leader on the field and popular and respected by the team. (My feelings about her and the national anthem have been stated here before.) I hope she's ready enough Sunday if Jill Ellis needs her. Ditto for Rose Lavelle. Let's win the World Cup and the rest can be hashed out later. Or not.
I think this has turned into a discussion of politics, generally. There's a forum specifically for that (and a thread there addressing the issues addressed here). Time to close this one?
Not sure if I agree about that. In the first place, I agree with the following statement that's been recently mad eon this thread: And then, it's not actually off-topic, since the very actors we're discussing about (Donald Trump and Megan Rapinoe), made sure that it was about sport, and soccer in particular, as much as it was about politics. So, are we pretending the two things are not intertwined, and that we've gone off-topic?
If you ask me, then I'd say that everything is connected and the current range of responses to our team's run at their fourth WC doesn't include instances of politics being applied to soccer, but instead is evidence of the political, gendered dynamics that are always at work becoming (even) more evident than they usually are. So I'd agree with you. However, we tend on BS to maintain an artificial boundary between soccer specific discussions and standard politics. The high number of complaints generated about the recent foray into the political flavor of news networks (absent any reference to the WC) suggests that this thread has violated the local expectation that we steer clear of politics. That said, I tend not to meddle in this forum and so I'm asking rather than simply acting.
I taught a college class on "The Politics of Sports" long ago that was one of the first of its kind in the U.S. I strongly agree with the statement by sitruc quoted just above by blissett. In my view, sports is political in many crucial ways, whether we discuss Megan Rapinoe's protests during the U.S. national anthem or not. I am against closing this thread. My post will be #289. The thread is now on its tenth day. Many people have contributed. The important issues we've been discussing are being passionately debated right now by soccer fans all over the U.S. and in many other countries. I support the right of everyone who's addressed these issues to speak out right here, including those with whom I disagree. For me, the "boundary" discussed above is worse than "artificial." Obviously, over 10 days and 288 posts, the moderators have chosen NOT to close this thread. I agree with and support their decision.
There was already a request a page ago to close it: In any case, everyone has said their piece...and more.
This couldn't be more true. Nonetheless, there is another reason why, in my opinion, it wouldn't be correct to close the thread right now: we're on the eve of the day when it will be decided if being invited or not at the White House as a World Champion team is even a possibility, because tomorrow we will know if the USWNT will win the World Cup or not. Since everything started with considering the possibility of that invitation and how it would have been received by the team or by single players, we can't rule out the possibility that tomorrow some of the actors involved could have something to say about the subject, that could be pertinent to this thread (and maybe that could even be in some way "new" compared to all that's been said so far). Of course, you could answer that the "roles" have already been decided and that everyone will keep playing their parts anyway, without adding much to the discussion, but how awkward would it be if tomorrow something actually very relevant would happen that's realeted to the subject of this thread and, just when some of us storms here to comment, he/she would find this thread locked?
SPOILER ALERT. Stop here if somehow you haven't seen today's game. Megan Rapinoe has "distracted" the U.S. national team to winning the World Cup again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And scored the game-winning goal. And has won the Golden Boot. And, no doubt, will continue her courageous activism on many crucial issues of social justice. GO MEGAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never happen because democracy is working and the common person elects the common person and Rapinoe is NOT common.
You forgot the Golden Ball. Now is Rapinoe entitled to speak, in Trump's opinion? Of course he's going to shut up and to pretend nothing ever happened.
I didn't "forget" the Golden Ball. I posted right when the game ended and didn't know who would win the Golden Ball. (I have no idea how that works.) But it's great that you added this.
The account just found out. Congratulations to the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team on winning the World Cup! Great and exciting play. America is proud of you all!— Unfollow Trump (@UnfollowTrump) July 7, 2019
