Some folks out there are Division 3 grads and/or supporters. And some folks will be or should be. :)

We have had some fun with this in the past - see Bears, Tartans and Ephs. I'm a William Smith Herons supporter, and women's soccer supporter in general.

PLEASE, post about your favorite team – top 10 or not - Division 3 has 268 (!!!) women’s soccer teams eligible for national ranking in 2014.

Many teams have video streaming of games, some for free, and some pay per view or per season. I will try and provide links.

Here is the Pre-Season Top 10 - NSCAA/Continental Tire Rankings 8/8/14, next rankings will be out 9/2/14

When I lived near Pittsburgh, PA, from 2000 to 2009, I would, when I could, attend matches at Carnegie Mellon, whose campus and neighborhood I loved, and La Roche College, which I lived less than 1/2 mile from. I'm following CMU on either FB or Twitter now, I forget which.

I only regret I couldn't go to an away match for them at Case. I have lots of extended family in Cleveland. It would be interesting to see that campus.

#2 Messiah at home got Past #10 Misericordia 1-0 2OT, with a goal in the 103rd minute.
[ I finally looked it up: Misericordia is derived from Latin for Merciful and Heart.]

As watched online, Mesericordia clearly had the better of Messiah the first half, but Messiah turned the table in the second half and overtime. Shots were 5-1 and corners were 3-1 favoring Misericordia at the half. The game ended with Messiah ahead on shots 15-8 and corners 7-3. Two standouts on the field were junior forward Nikki Elsaesser for Messiah and senior forward Megan Mahoney for Misericordia.

Unranked (but receiving votes) Amherst shut out #7 Williams 2-0 at home. Amherst should move in to the Top 25.

#5 Carnegie Mellon survived a visit to unranked Grove City winning 1-0 in 2OT, the goal coming in the 106th minute.

#23 William Smith looked solid at home on Saturday and Sunday beating unranked Fredonia 4-0 and Pitt Bradford 8-0.

Shout out to University Athletic Association Women’s Soccer, with four teams in the NCAA top Eleven. No league games have been played, but the standings, based on games so far are:

    1…..#1..…Washington University 7-0-0
    2…..#5…..Carnegie Mellon 7-0-0
    3…..#11...Chicago 7-0-0
    4…………...Brandeis 6 -1-0
    5…….……..Case Western Reserve 5-1-1
    6…..#6…..Emory 4-0-2
    7……………NYU 4-3-0
    8……………Rochester 3-2-2

Tons of schools now have live webcasts of their home games in many sports. Even if your school does not, chances are whoever they play on the road will.

#10 Wheaton (IL) at #1 WashU played to a 0-0 draw in 2 OT. By accounts, Wheaton keeper Kelsey Graham was player of the match with nine saves.

On the Frostburg live feed, I watched the second half and last 8 min of the first half of #4 Carnegie Mellon’s 3-0 win at Frostburg State (MD). All goals were in the 2nd half. To a player, CMU was larger physically than Frostburg, and I don’t think it was the horizontal striped kits. Probably due to the below average camera work, no player on either team stood out to me as a cut above the rest this afternoon.

#18 Amherst won two games, beating Tufts on the road 2-0 and Bates at home 2-1.

I caught the second half as #17 William Smith dispatched St. Lawrence 2-0 at home with a goal in each half. Being partial to defenders, I think WS sophomore left back Emma Diehl has All-American potential – she plays with the head and experience of a defender and gets forward and makes good crosses like a wing player.

CJ, thanks for all your work on this! I'm thinking I'm going to spend more time at the Amherst website following how their ladies are doing. I remember with great feeling my days practicing and playing on the fields there (men's soccer). It's where I developed my absolute conviction that there's nothing better than running around a grass field in great weather kicking a ball around with teammates.

That they are, except that the building wasn't there yet. The goal structure you see is a several generation later replacement for the one where Navy hit the framework six times (in addition to two hits at the other end) the year we beat them 2-1 after being outshot 35-2.

#1 WashU and #5 Emory played to a 1-1 draw in 2OT at WashU. The two teams traded goals in the 14th minute, scoring 32 seconds apart. WashU scored first: sophomore Katie Chandler scored from a pass from senior Lillie Toaspern. Emory answered when Emily Feldman headed in a cross from Charlotte Butker. The goal allowed by WashU was its second this season.

#4 Carnegie Mellon won on the road vs. #12 Chicago 2-1. C-M scored both goals in the first half and Chicago scored in the 83rd minute. C-M goals were in the 11th minute by sophomore Megan Bartoshuk and in the 22nd minute by senior Lauren Simicich. Junior Naomi Pacalin scored for Chicago.

#16 Montclair State won the Battle of New Jersey 1-0 over #10 TCNJ. The only goal of the game came with 11:40 left in regulation as senior Francesca Gibson touched in a pass from junior Martina Landeka. Watching online, the game was played mostly between the 18 yard boxes. I was impressed by the midfield play of freshman Jessica Golden for TCNJ.

#18 Amherst defeated Hamilton 3-0. Sophomore midfielder Emily Hester score two second half goals.

#14 William Smith looked strong as the Herons took care of business vs. Bard 6-0 and Vassar 5-0 at home on Friday and Saturday. The eleven goals were scored by 6 players with assists from 7 players; senior Maddie Buckley lead the scorers with 4 goals and an assist.

#16 Montclair State also won the City of Angels charity game vs. Paterson 2-0.

There are 268 schools eligible to become D3 National Champions in 2014. I looked outside the current Top 25 to find where returning 2013 NSCAA All-Americans were playing. There are two in the Northwest Conference: [Puget Sound has been in the Top 25 this year, but was not on 10-8-14.]

Coach Jon - Are you getting this from another blog site or website? I like the d3 stuff a lot but don't know if there's much appetite for it here on BS. I don't know this particular conference well but I'll chime in when I do. Clearly, you have to admire the UAA. A nearly nationwide d3 conference with many terrific teams in many terrific cities. You have to believe it would be fun to be competing at one of those schools. The actual NCAA rankings will start coming out next week and will be very interesting. Sometimes a bit different than the coaches polls. Don't know if you're going to try to talk about every conference but maybe go by NCAA Regions? Just an idea. I'm not sure if there's a real good RPI type site for d3 but I like how Bennett and Massey also do d3 teams. D3soccer.com is good too. Thanks for effort on d3.

Thanks Eddie K. I did not know about Massey or Bennett and now I do. I look at D3 Soccer fairly often. All the stuff I post is my own on-line research. Agree on the UAA.

It appears William Smith is ranked #2 or #3 by Bennett and Massey. Having watched them play live and seeing that their early season losses were to #1 Messiah and #4 Carnegie Mellon, I know they belong in the Top 5. They should never have dropped out of the Top 10.

I was not planning on doing all the conferences - just trying to shed some light on the schools playing outside the leagues where the perennial heavy hitters play.

I'm aware of the lack of interest in D3 on BigSoccer - having done this in the past. When you compare student populations of 29,000 at UNC vs. 2900 at Messiah and multiply the difference by hundreds of schools, there is a mathematical driver. Coupled with the fact that in general the better players are in D1, the lack of interest in D3 is inevitable.

Even so it is still worth talking about and fun to follow. All of the young ladies playing in college at any level have something to be proud of and less than 5% of the student athletes that play in high school are able to play at the next level. I know girls that play at the D1, D2 & D3 levels and they are all very good players with some but not a tremendous amount of separation in their skill sets and athleticism. Thanks for the posts, I have enjoyed reading them.
