I remember very clearly an interview with George Lucas, sometime between the first and second Star Wars movies, where he stated that he envisioned three trilogies. Since then he has said several times that this was not what he said/intended, but I always knew there would be more. Way too much money not to make any more. And I thought Empire Strikes Back sucked and Revenge of the Ewoks was shit. I got off the Star Wars bandwagon a looong time ago...
Cons: New Death Star features two smaller spheres on it's top. Pros: Restraining Order keeps George Lucas 5 miles from the writers' room and set of any future Star Wars film.
A new trilogy might be interesting, provided the writing is far superior to the prequels and they move away from the protagonists of the first six movies. There is a lot of decent material in the extended universe to make something entertaining and more worthwhile than Phantom, Clones and Revenge.
I would love it if they just ditched the last three films and straight up remake Eps I - III. Seriously-- why the hell not.
This is one of three things I'd like to see. The other two: Turn creative control over to Joss Whedon "Rogue Squadron" done "Band of Brothers"-style for TV Bottom line is they either need to fix everything Lucas ********ed up in the prequels, or stay away from the canonized characters as much as possible.
When I heard Disney purchased them my reaction was "it's not like they're going to make more 'Star Wars' movies. Fifty more Indiana Jones, a Howard the Duck remake and Star Wars television shows and straight to video releases, but no more feature films." I feel dumb.
Whereas the basic rule of the internet is: Do Not Read the Comments; The basic rule of the The AV Club is: You Could Pretty Much Read Just the Comments. A string of comments from: "Today in yes, really: Disney buys Lucasfilm," Hide your childhood, 'cause they rapin' everybody's childhood around here Our childhoods were asking for it. I know; my childhood dresses like a total slut. I thought it was just a Halloween costume! Legitimate childhood rape? Sexy Rape Victim! It's this year's hot new outfit! They can actual restore our childhoods, and give our children BETTER ones. That sounds so…much like an advert for vaginoplasty. Wouldn't it be funny if your childhood got raped by five guys like, right now? Wouldn't it be funny if George Lucas.... ah, screw it. I heard that your childhood has a way of shutting that whole thing down.
Put me in the camp of people happy about this announcement. I'm optimistic-- guardedly so, but optimistic. And for all of you talking about "childhoods being raped"-- consider that this means that we might actually see the ORIGINAL, UNALTERED movies released on Blu-Ray now, as George himself no longer has the rights. I see no reason why the Star Wars universe couldn't be the source for lots of great new films and shows. Consider the names that could now, theoretically, he hired to make the new films. Joss Whedon-- whom Disney has used for their Marvel properties. Brad Bird, thanks to his Pixar connection. And other extremely talented directors known to be Star Wars fanboys. J. J. Abrams, for example. Peter Jackson. Guillermo Del Toro. My dream choice would be Ronald D. Moore. My ideal Star Wars film is like a long episode of Battlestar Galactica set in the Star Wars universe. It'd be all, "What if the Empire had a point?"
all i want is the original trilogy released on blu ray.... none of this special edition crap.... HAN SHOT FIRST
Star Wars isn't deep enough to support a good Whedon work. It's purely about the struggle of Great People, some good and some evil. To introduce themes and philosophy into Star Wars would be changing the very heart of it. He is busy wreckingturning Star Trek into Star Wars. The point of the Empire was that it was the whim of one man. It has no point besides that. It is not it's own entity, it has no set structure, it has no rules, it has no politics, it has no internal conflicts. It is just the tool of the Emperor.
But my point is it could become something deeper than what it already is. More complex morally. I'd enjoy the hell out of that. Now, that probably won't happen, as Disney is likely to opt to play it safe. But I still think there is great storytelling potential by trying to make it a story that's more complicated than just good vs. evil.
Which is actually why the Rogue Squadron books are so good. How do mere mortals make a difference in a world of gods? You can't tell me Whedon wouldn't spin that into pure ********ing gold.
It is within the realm of imagination to do this. With the death of the Emperor, you could have a late stage Roman Empire situation with generals jockeying for power. Or have the weak rule of the Rebels shaken by destabilizing forces for freeing slaves/freeing droids/unseating the Hutts/whatever and the moral quandaries involved. Buffy/Angel/Firefly/Dollhouse are all about power, the interactions between the powered and the unpowered, and the unintended consequences of using power. But like you I am certain they will just end up having some dark lord try to rule the galaxy but be stopped by plucky rebels as they destroy his technological seat of his power. Because that's Star Wars and my first paragraph isn't.
