I'm sure there were others like this but this is the only one I can think of at the moment. Arrogance + cruelty against an overmatched opponent made this at least memorable.
Good goal, but what did you expect. It was the old WHA after all. Yeah! Played in the old Nordiques arena, home to many a Nordiques-Canadians bench-clearing brawl, like this one euphemistically called the "Good Friday Massacre". Old time hockey. Brings a tear to your eye.
Pat Stapleton and JC Tremblay were the two defenders that were parted by Moses ... eh, Khralamov, and Gerry Cheevers was in goal. The problem with the WHA All-Stars was its depth. But, lest you think Kharlamov was a one-trick-wonder, here he is against the New York Rangers, ding the same thing to Carol Vadnais, Doug Jarrett and John Davidson in 1976 (OK, the Rangers were crap that year, Espo notwithstanding).
Here's a great one from my hometown team, FC Cincinnati's first ever friendly. A 2-2 tie against FC Reykjavik
Miller just sliced it unintentionally. The ball slid off his foot. Now, here's a goal that looked simple ... except it was one of the greatest Der Bomber has ever scored. PS. Müller in German = Miller in English, but that's where the similarities end.
Going all the way back to my first WC ... at least, the one I recall watching and listening live rather than on You Tube. Anatoly Byshovets vs. Belgium in the 1970 WC group stage.
Some of you will remember the first chance many of us had to view these goals after their initial airing, when in the pre-YouTube era a website called Foot of God the emerged somewhere around 2001. It was amazing. So many clips. FIFA and other rights holders went after it big time and it shut down rather quickly. Instead they ended up with YouTube which is a whole different level of access.
Back in ... eh, 1998 (may have been 1994), Telemundo got the right for the classic WC matches. That's where I first saw USSR-Portugal WC'66 3rd place match (Eusebio vs. Yashin) and a few others. WC'70 was the first I watched on TV, even though I wasn't exactly sure what was going on and who was who. Another classic. The 1978 Arie Haan vs. Italy.
I spent some money in the mid-to-late 90s buying VHS tapes of classic games from private collectors. I still have them but can't loan them out any longer since I get blank stares from my students about what a VCR might be. But they are fun to trot out from time to time, especially the ones with Eusebio. Those are the only ones I acquired to watch the player primarily rather than the game,
Similar goal happened in an MLS game in 2008. Danny Cepero (NYRB) scored off a free kick in Giants Stadium. Definitely benefited from the bounce off the turf. This was a Sierra Mist Goal of the Week winner, if I remember correctly.
this has to be the most embarrassing moment of that GK's career I remember watching it and thinking how pathetic it was. That it won GOTW was even more of a shame.
I don't know. His career only lasted 3 years. Having a goal on his stat sheet, even if it was pathetic, has still gotta be cool. If I remember correctly, he was only playing because John Conway had been suspended and then released for substance abuse (GNC supplements was the claim), and Bouna Condoul was sucking it up.
