I wonder where that leaves Detroit City FC. By the wayside, with 750k or so in debt from that stadium repairs project that they just started? Hopefully they can become part of this, a cool little club.
Their press release today seems to indicate that the MLS investors have reached out to DCFC. Positive news.
I think the best way to incorporate DCFC is to help them move up to the USL ASAP. The folks at DCFC could run the business side of the team, and Detroit MLS could provide the coaching staff and players (much like the Rio Grande Valley/Houston relationship). That way, Detroit MLS would have a presence early, they could grow their fan base, and have roster-ready player when the MLS team comes online. Then, the USL team could become the Detroit MLS "farm team" with the same Rio Grande Valley/Houston relationship. DCFC would live on, Detroit MLS could have a great jump start, and teams both could be successful and popular.
Why would you assume that? So far MLS teams have started 12 USL teams. Three of those are located somewhere other than the MLS city. And one of those, Orlando, is so close that they are still calling the team Orlando City B. Those three are among the newer ones so maybe there is a trend in that direction but it is too early to assume that will become normal.
Good god, the whining from some of the more "authentic" "against modern football" DCFC fans is already getting pathetic.
Well since Duggan owns the USL rights to Detroit, it was only an assumption they would put the USL club in Grand Rapids if opening a USL club is their plan. Unless of course Duggan is going to be included in the ownership group.
I'd be surprised if Duggan actually starts a USL team in Detroit if this new MLS group is successful in getting a stadium downtown. I guess he could hold on to the USL franchise rights just to stop the MLS group but do you really think he would start a USL team in Detroit to compete with the MLS team? I guess we'll see what happens.
Are we sure his USL rights would even prevent a Detroit MLS team from starting a 2 team in Detroit? I wouldn't be surprised if the deal USL struck with MLS allowed MLS teams to ignore local USL rights if the MLS team was located in the same city.
From this article Duggan does seem to be involved in some sort of capacity. EDIT: not the same Duggan, my bad. His brother, still not the same person you were referring to.
this will be a ONE BILLION dollar project: http://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/soccer/major-league-soccer-commissioner-in-detroit#
Tons of articles out there: https://www.google.com/search?q=mls...vLHMAhVS3GMKHUcfCNoQ_AUIBygB&biw=1024&bih=653 By the way, I thought this proposal sounded familiar: http://www.crainsdetroit.com/articl...itch-plan-for-mls-stadium-mall-condos-on-jail
As much as I love Sacramento and what theyve been able to accomplish, Im more excited about Detroit entering MLS. This is the exact expansion team that MLS needs to help significantly boost the next TV deal in 2022.
Of which the stadium is a small portion of that. Most of it is going into the rest of the property and the hope is that the stadium will drive foot traffic to the rest of the businesses that will be built on the property.
Thanks! I hadn't seen a number for the stadium in the few articles I've read on the topic. I have seen speculation that the MLS team seems to be the grease to get Detroit to agree on the rest of the project rather than the impetus for the project.
I think the MLS group has some intention of involving DCFC, idk if it has been mentioned yet but the banners flown by fans in the stadium concepts are all Maroon/Burgandy and Yellow Gold (like DCFC). It could be coincidence, or due to Gilberts influence, but I feel they will try and do something with what is already there.
What would be good name and colors for the MLS team in the event that DCFC has no part of it? My idea... A play on works teams where the team is associated with a company, possibly comprised of or historically comprised of employees.... Detroit Motors FC: sounds like it could be one of the big 3 like General Motors, but sounds like it could be a standard american team name as well.
