I was going back through the thread and was reminded that he has two younger brothers. Both US citizens (based on dad's length of time in the US), but not currently eligible for US play without asking for the "Zelalem waiver."
Against New Zealand though. Were they any good? Congrats to him and the USSF: either way it's good for the US NT programme, but an Eredivisie player should look good against an Oceania U-20 squad.
Not *specifically* the same rule as Gedion, but a similar one... There are situations where just being born a citizen isn't enough. Because neither they nor their parents nor grandparents were born in the US, they need to live 2 years continuously in the US. Here's the eligibility provision: 6. Nationality entitling Players to represent more than one Association 1.A Player who, under the terms of art. 5, is eligible to represent more than one Association on account of his nationality, may play in an international match for one of these Associations only if, in addition to having the relevant nationality, he fulfills at least one of the following conditions: a) He was born on the territory of the relevant Association; b) His biological mother or biological father was born on the territory of the relevant Association; c) His grandmother or grandfather was born on the territory of the relevant Association; d) He has lived continuously on the territory of the relevant Association for at least two years. So, if they didn't do that, they would need a waiver from FIFA (assuming there isn't some rule change in the meantime). It's better than the rule for naturalized players, but still a hurdle to overcome. If Desevio had been born in Holland, rather than the US, he would have faced the same issue.
A waiver should be pretty pro forma though. I mean, supposing his brother(s) is/are good enough for Holland and are called up but refuse to play for the Oranjie, how likely is it that the KNVB will object to FIFA granting a waiver?
Hard to say. The 2 year standard is obviously easier to meet and you never know how a bureaucracy will react. I'm not sure if anyone has ever asked for a waiver on this provision. We'll see when the time comes...
Apparently the Dutch federation has jumped the gun Desevio's younger bother, Deron Payne (age 12) who plays for AZ's youth teams, was called up by Holland's U14 team last month. He's a right back too. Two bothers simultaneously playing for different national teams. It has happened before but I am not sure if this is a first where one of the teams is the United States. @Dave Marino-Nachison - do you have any thoughts? PS.. there is a third Payne brother who is 9. He plays on the second best amateur youth team of that age in Holland.
Good question, but I don't have an answer off the top of my head unfortunately. Will have to think on it a bit.
And you have a case of "almost playing for different countries at the same time" with Fernando Arce Junior & Senior. Their 1st/last caps were less than a year apart, as near as I can tell.
Getting closer, but still not US brothers in different feds at the same time -- twin sisters Sabrina (US) and Monica (Mexico) Flores played against each other when the two U20 squads met last night at the NTC Challenge in Carson.
I am hearing that Desevio will sign his multiyear contract with FC Groningen tomorrow (Friday) The club rate him highly. I am thinking he will play significant minutes this season
Not one to typically say "cap him now" but I really think Payne is a talent that is imperative to the defense going forward. He looked great for the U20s.
THIS. he can potentially be the answer at RB. All the qualities of Chandler but much better defensively especially position wise. Chandler,Payne, Yedlin, FJ, as full back options would be great
Here's the announcement. Deal through 2017 with an option for an additional year http://www.fcgroningen.nl/home/nieu...rustic-en-idrissi-tekent-eerste-profcontract/
Apparently in the group stage of the Europa League? http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/season=2016/clubs/index.html
Nice. I know they finished mid-table, but the Netherlands has some complex playoff to determine their European slots. Good to see that Groningen is in - the surplus matches will create opportunities.
Vitesse won the playoffs when 'veen fell apart the second game (too many playoff games, btw.) But at least 'veen put away Feyenie first. (between AZ and 'veen... well, I won't gloat... no. I won't!) The tractor boys won the cup. (see it was already mentioned.)
