Julio Cesar Dely Valdes has officially announced his retirement from football. After half a year at Nacional in Uruguay he has decided to leave the game and return to Panama where he will set up a school with his twin brother.

Dely Valdes was in the stands for the recent league match of Málaga, the team he last played for in Spain. Before that he played for Oviedo when they were still a first division team.

Perhaps someone else has info for a more complete bio of one of Concacaf's best strikers over the last decade.

His twin brother also retired. They were both playing for Nacional.

I would dare to say J.C.D.V. was the best central american player since Magico Gonzalez, its a pitty Panama hasnt got a competitive squad or he might had made it to the top teams in the world.

here is brother! still active, with Arabe Unido

One of those great players who had never the oportunity to step on the pitch of a World Cup match.

    Panama hails home-grown hero Valdés

Globetrotting striker Julio César Dely Valdés is set to receive a well-earned tribute from home fans this Sunday after a career spanning more than 17 years, most of it spent outside his native Panama.
The testimonial match, organised by the Panamanian Football Federation (Fepafut) and the player himself, will see the national side turn out against an invitation eleven picked from among Dely's former team-mates at the many clubs he has served over the years. Uruguayan coach Óscar Washington Tabárez will be directing the guests from the touchline: "Julio is one of the nicest people I have ever had the good fortune to work with. It will be a pleasure to be there." It is a well-deserved tribute for a footballer voted best Panamanian sportsman of the 20th century. "He has achieved a lot and is worthy of the honour," says Fepafut secretary, Ramón Cardoze.

As that article notes, however, this probably isn't a true farewell game. He's been playing for the national team in recent friendlies, and all the evidence indicates that they want him to play in the qualifiers as well. As he notes in the article, he won't turn down his country.

If that's the case then his last game will be June 20th, since St. Lucia is going to advance to the semifinals. :D

    VIPs invited:
