My top four: Eddie Pope wins the 1996 MLS Cup final (@2:25) Lewis Neal clinches a playoff spot after years and years of shit: Nick Deleon just a couple of weeks later against the Red Bulls (@9:32) Rooney to Acosta: Honorable Mention: Marcelo Gallardo
The goals in the 2004 Eastern Conference Championship game against New England. Eskandarian @ 11:25 Moreno @ 21:57 Gomez @ 1:12:30 Greg Lalas: "I don't know if you can put three prettier goals together for one team. DC has had lovely goals."
Purely for the goal irrelevant of all other factors: Not really a contender but I love it - Pontius pushing Terry Henry off the ball and taking it the whole half and scoring top corner
Also, I will always hold a special fondness for the two-goals-in-one-minute to turn defeat into victory against the Metrodonkeys, April 26, 2009. (skip to 3:08) In the Jersey broadcast (which, sadly, isn't on YouTube), hearing Shep Messing say "this may go down as the worst loss in the history of this franchise" and watching this video soon after: . . .just warmed my heart like crazy.
I was there for nbrs 2, 3, 4, & 5. I'd include Gomez's winning header vs New England at RFK. Greatest goals need to be in the biggest games. Rooney to Acosta was spectacular, but just not in a truly important game.
The Gomez goal probably is tops, I remember to this day telling my son that Nowak should pull Gomez because he was gassed. Goal came about 3 minutes later. I need a good spanking. Number 2 would be NDL's against RBNY. Beautiful run and finish and it crushed the soul of Henry, Lade (who kept NDL onside) and all the other RBNY players. A fitting followup to the Geigering of the first PK and Joe Willis making the save of the century on the second attempt.
This game has potential to be important. Could be the turning point in modern DCU history. It’s importance can’t be determined at the moment.
As a fan I've never been able to explain what happened to NDL. One of the most exciting players to watch at one point in his career
DC United happened to him. Kid looked sharp as a rookie, putting up a decent number of goals/assists. But then Ben got his hands on him, played him in 7 different positions so he couldn't master any of them.
NDL played wing from 2012-2015. His decline was well before he moved to center mid, and then right back. Not saying the staff aren't responsible, but they didn't just move him off the wing when he was killing it
I remember walking back to the bus after this game, and some teenaged kid moons us. I kept thinking, "Is that all you've got to say?" Good memories. Thanks to all. asitis
Watching that game, I realize how far the standard of play has come in a few years. And the goal keeping was just awful at both ends. Struck by how that franchise stayed in NJ when they could only get a few dozen fans to a game vs their bitter rivals. Until the other night, it was Kemp’s blast in the 6-4 RSL game when my then 5 yo son was temporarily alone in RFK as he ran a section over to celebrate with friends who’d ran over to our section after the prior goal.
Sounds oddly like the claims of a 1000 year run made buy a guy with a funny mustache about 80 years ago
