Hmm ... I take this is a major promotion.

The US kids at Hoffenheim might not.

Gyau is already in the U23 team at Hoffenheim, so this doesn't really affect him. I don't know what will happen with Renken and his new coach.

well that's good news, he must be pretty highly rated as a coach, because Hoffenheim and Dortmund have great youth programs.

OK.. I am going to try an interactive experiment with BigSoccer

I am going to interview David Wagner this week for an upcoming article. I have a bunch of questions to ask him but if anyone here has any questions, let me know. Post them in this thread. If I like the questions, I'll ask him.

    1. What are the key things for other American coaches to do to follow in your footsteps in greater numbers?

    2. When did you know that your bosses believed in you?

    3. What coaching qualities do you think are your strong suit, based on feedback, and where do you need to grow to progress?

    4. Top level American youth players seem to be a good fit for the German system. What can America do to produce more players that would fit in with the top youth programs over there and what can we adopt from German youth programs at the 6-12 age level, the serious youth level, and the MLS academy level over here?

What does he think of Renken and Gyau at Hoffenheim?

    Here you go

Here is the LONG interview with David Wagner where he talks about the recent changes Germany has had in player development and the requirements of coaches there.

He also talks about US player development

It should be noted that Dortmund II can't get promoted to the BL 2. but still Liga 3. would be good competition for him at his age

He's already in the third and final year of his contract, that's enough. They won't promote him to head coach, and I think he's seen everything there is after 3 years. He's probably already applying for other jobs.

Maybe, but this shouldn't be Wagner's first choice. I can't think of a top level coach who stayed at a job like his for more than 3 years. A renewal would be nice if he settled down in Dortmund with his family and wants to combine a quiet life with a job in pro soccer. A new job should be the next step if he aims higher than that.

One person who is unlikely to be joining Liverpool is David Wagner, who announced his departure from Klopp’s former club Borussia Dortmund on Monday, where he was the Under-23 team manager. Klopp is godfather to the German-born former US international’s daughter while Wagner was best man when Klopp remarried in 2005. Wagner has firm offers from at least two Bundesliga clubs but is said to want to take time selecting his next move.

Of the two, Wagner is the less experienced coach. Prior to joining Huddersfield, his only management experience was as the U23 coach at Borussia Dortmund. (Until this season, under Wagner, BVB's U23s played in Germany's 3rd Division.) Wagner is best friends with Jurgen Klopp, and when Klopp left Dortmund and later signed with Liverpool, there was widespread speculation Wagner wasn't far behind. His move to Huddersfield was not expected, but it's a major step up for the German-American. At Huddersfield, he will reportedly serve in a more German-style head coach role, working alongside a sporting director, rather than as a more dictatorial English-style manager.
