We're delighted to have agreed terms, in principle, with Swansea City for the transfer of Daniel James to #MUFC. Further details will be revealed in due course.— Manchester United (@ManUtd) June 7, 2019
Hope things work out - our transfer record of late is not good, but right age and reasonable fee in this current market. Be interesting to see if deployed at RWF (our problem area) or LWF (which suits him best it seems but we have more options).
Hoping he goes the way of guys like Maddison, Brooks and others (players who came from the Championship and performed well in the Prem pretty quickly). Giggsy, perhaps a bit biased, really believes in him. https://www.skysports.com/football/...es-backed-to-succeed-at-man-utd-by-ryan-giggs
At the end of the day, this signing is a gamble. Whether it turns into a good or bad one remains to be seen. Not enough intimate knowledge about the guy at this point to really tell anything else, one way or another. Not going to bash this signing, but not going to be gassed about it all the same. Hopeful, that he will work out and contribute on some level relatively quickly.
Whether this is a good signing or not all depends on expectations. If he's a depth guy and a stopgap until next season when we push for Sancho, then it's a good move. It allows us to spend big elsewhere. However, if this signing is meant to be our RW fix instead of signing a big name like Sancho, then it is a collosal feck up.
I know its just a highlights clip, but tbf does look like he can dribble with both feet and also cross with his left. Couldn't find a highlights reel for his weaknesses though ... Did you hear - he is quick
Hes 21 and hasn't had an elite season in a lower league yet so thats a red flag. Could just be that he's a bit of a late bloomer (not that 21 is old) and usually top prospects show flashes earlier than 21. But we will see.
He’s fast. But even that youtube video was unimpressive. And he plays primarily on the left. For his age, he should slot right into the first team, yeah? Is the world lonely for quality RW?
What James will bring to United. https://www.skysports.com/football/...united-what-will-winger-bring-to-old-Trafford As it's been said, don't think he's necessarily expected to be a starter for us. He's someone who is there to provide competition and relief to projected starters. If he does end up overperforming and smashing expectations, then good on him, Ole or whoever else at the club who spotted him. But that at that price, we shouldn't expect a difference maker type signing. A contributor, who can chip in here and there and spell other guys, is more in line with what I hope to see from him. Anything more, will be a (welcome) surprise.
For me 80%+ of our first team signings in number should be the near-finished article (ie > 4 in 5) immediately ready for first team. So a well rounded transfer policy should take a chance on some (hopefully well-scouted) young prospects from lower divisions, maybe one a window or so. May or may not pan out and fans will always say not MUQ etc. when we sign this type of player (which is missing the point). The evidence from other clubs though is that some can work out really well. There is not much downside if they dont given age/cost/resale value. Only concern would be if we are not doing the 80%+ of the other transfers we should be doing. Or if we are relying on one of these signings as primary / secondary for a given position.

James playing on the left today for Wales. Really hasn't seen much of the ball tbh. Has had one good moment though in the first half where he got behind the Croatian defense, with his speed (very quick to get off the blocks and at top speed) and did manage to put in a couple of good crosses but the finish on both of them was poor. I think he could be an interesting option to turn to, off the bench going against tired legs in particular.
some stats from last season https://www.skysports.com/football/...lay-in-first-game-since-transfer-announcement
James need to get used to rough treatment - Giggs https://www.skysports.com/football/...ust-get-used-to-getting-kicked-says-ryan-gigs Sidenote, James's pay is believed to go from the 4k/wk he was making at Swansea to 67k/wk in his new contract with United. As the saying goes, his life is about to change.
Daniel James joins Manchester United a huge prospect but with work to do https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...ospect?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Copy_to_clipboard
There's a video of him taking the ball upfield against Hungary on r/reddevils right now. The way he carries the ball reminds me a lot of Ribery. Very similar body types and carrying styles.
.James has officially put pen to paper on a 5yr deal with United. Welcome to the #MUFC family, @Daniel_James_97 👋 pic.twitter.com/VDrSQooZPk— Manchester United (@ManUtd) June 12, 2019
