https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2018/10/22/us-soccer-executive-dan-flynn-step-down/ I am very interested to hear the real story behind this. Maybe it has to do with Ernie and the head coach decision? My sense is this is a good thing for US Soccer.
Wow, this is huge. He's been CEO since 2000. He's been around so long his college coach was Harry Keough, who starred in the 1-0 victory over England in 1950. Time for a new perspective though.
Flynn is a heart transplant recipient. May need to take extra care of himself or maybe just wants to do something else after all these years. One complication I could see is Berhalter getting kicked upstairs and a conflict of interest - nepotism - with selection of his brother Gregg as manager.
Too late, unfortunately - irreversible damage has already been done. Nothing against him personally, though, and I'm happy to hear (per Goff) that Flynn's departure is not health-related.
I'm also glad to hear this is not because of health issues. I'm thinking there is a restructuring coming down the pipe. The Wapo article mentioned a women's team GM coming as well. I wonder if his replacement will be more of a COO instead of a CEO. Someone who runs the business side, negotiates the contracts, but doesn't get involved in coaching/soccer decisions.
Garber to run as successor. You heard it here first. In all seriousness, I’m not sure how this will affect the USSF in the long run, but seeing his track record from the start of the 21st century Flynn has done an excellent job keeping the federation in the gray, not sure specifically what his roles were in regards to handling changes within the program but financially, he’s done well.
Based on Goff's article, it looks like something that was known and planned for by the board of directors. While I buy that it's not directly health-related, I'm sure that his cardiac issues figured into his decision. Flynn is now 63, and average life expectancy for heart transplant is about 9 years - he probably wants to make good use of his time. I wish him the best.
I don't wish Flynn ill health, but he's just another crook and good riddance. If only this meant something would change, but alas.
Hopefully that's not what it signals, rather that Vermes or Marsch were the choice from Earnie and Dan threw a tantrum. But the cynical part of me thinks you're right, and this was Flynn's swan song. Berhalter was Earnie's teammate the most and the easiest to get along with, so I'm think he'd be amenable to that choice.
This suggests that we have no idea what is actually happening. If we did we would have mentioned this before it happened. By not knowing this was happening it weakens any other claim of knowledge. Sure predictions or explanations may be correct but there are any number of other explanations such as Flynn got the GM situation handled and is now ready to step aside. Do I "know" this? Of course not.
