Re: Czech national team 08/09 [R]

Marek Jankulovski has decided to continue with the Czech national team. It was expected he would retire from international football at the end of 2008.

    Czech Republic 1 - Malta 0

Goal by Necid, in the 77'.

I missed the 2nd half because my feed cut out, but the experimental squad was enough to defeat Malta in Jablonec. Hard too read to much into this.

well the chairman Ivan Hašek took over coaching duties after the interim failed to impress. He just called in the roster for the Wednesday friendly against Belgium. Several players still out with injury, Ujfalusi still retired, but Milan Baroš and Václav Svěrkoš have had their indefinate suspensions lifted. The squad as it stands:

    Goalkeepers:

    Petr Čech Chelsea (Anglie) 20.5.1982 67 0
Jaroslav Drobný Hertha Berlín (Němec.) 18.10.1979 1 0

    Defenders:

    Zdeněk Grygera Juventus (Itálie) 14.5.1980 62 2
    Roman Hubník Sparta 6.6.1984 1 0
Marek Jankulovski AC Milán (Itálie) 9.5.1977 74 12
    Michal Kadlec Leverkusen (Německo) 13.12.1984 11 1
Zdeněk Pospěch FC Kodaň (Dánsko) 14.12.1978 15 0
    David Rozehnal Hamburk (Německo) 5.7.1980 56 0
    Tomáš Sivok Besiktas 15.9.1983 6 0
    Jan Šimůnek Wolfsburg 20.2.1987 1 0

    Midfielders:

    David Jarolím Hamburk (Německo) 17.5.1979 24 1
    Tomáš Hübschman Šach Doněck (Ukrajina) 4. 9. 1981 21 0
    Jaroslav Plašil Bordeaux (Francie) 5.1.1982 46 3
    Jan Polák Anderlecht (Belgie) 14.3.1981 47 6
    Daniel Pudil Genk (Belgie) 27.9.1985 4 1

    Forwards:

    Milan Baroš Galatasaray (Turecko) 28.10.1981 74 32
    Tomáš Necid CSKA Moskva (Rusko) 13.8. 1989 5 2
    Václav Svěrkoš Sochaux (Francie) 1.11.1983 7 1
    Jiří Štajner Hannover 27.5.1976 27 4

Hmmm... I like the forwards... suprised to see no Suchý or Sionko. Only 1 Gambrinus Liga player, and of course Rosický still having nagging injuries... our midfield kind of sucks. I would like to see Holek and Fillo get a shot.

    final

    Czech Republic 3- Belgium 1
goals by Hubnik, Baros, and Rozehnal.

Only a friendly and I can't rate the quality of the Belgian squad, but by far the best showing by us for some time.

Rumour has it that the Czechs will be heading to the USA for a friendly tournament this May.

In other games, they will play away to Scotland on March 3rd and host Morocco in Olomouc on August 18th. I hope to attend the game in Olomouc. The last time the city hosted the national team was back in August of 2002 against Slovakia.

Czech Republic lost 1-0 away to Scotland last week. I'm not too bothered about it, but would have liked the Czechs to score at least one of their chances.

saw a few clips of the Scotland fixture, but haven't had time to really study the the tape. Scotland brought a much more expereinced squad than we did though, so I'm not really suprised. (Rosicky, Plasil, and Hubschman have a combined 151 caps, the rest of the squad against Scotland combined for about 40).

The two matches in the US (I'll be at the Turkey match) may well be a good chance to fill the open spots on our team going into the Euro qualifiers.

    I'm encouraged by:
    Rosicky's return
    Necid's continuined development/potential
    Plasil's form with Bordeaux

    I'm Hopeful for/of:
lot of new players getting a chance
Baros recovering health and form from the foot injury
Petr Cech having a gone run of confidence

    I'm discouraged by:
    Sverkos' form with Sochaux
our defense, most are old and slow or young and inexperienced
We have a lot of ongoing overhaul, and the start of qualification is not far off. Home Lithuania we will most likely win, but home Scotland is the key match, and I worry we'll still be experimenting right up to the opening kick.

We play the USA and Turkey, both games in the USA later this month, May 22 and May 25; squad hasn't been announced. Then in August we have a game scheduled against Morocco. Then we start Euro 2012 qualification.
