I think the AFC teams will come back in the Algarve unless one of them turns up at the Shebelieves (sic) Cup
Austria, is one of the funnest teams to watch; they play an exciting, direct style. They had a really good game in their last friendly vs Germany. They never held back, taking the Olympic gold medalists head on. Just they don't go deep, and almost no subs is what gave the game away against the Germans Of course Australia has some of the most exciting players in the world in the likes of Kerr, Foord & Devanna. I pick these two clubs to make to the championship game. One bad thing, as interesting as this tourney might be, the games never seem to get streamlined or on tv. Hopefully that will change.
We saw a few France games on tv through the years... it's just that no one buys the tv rights in general.
I wonder if the SheBelieves Cup will still have the same four teams or if it's being increased to 6 or 8? I think then we could determine the teams for the Algarve Cup.
Participating teams : Austria Belgium Czech Republic ( host) Italy Korea DPR New Zealand Republic of Ireland Republic of Korea Scotland Switzerland Thailand Wales
looks like Wales has replaced South Africa. Ironically, Cyprus has never participated in the Cyprus Cup.
Group A: Belgium, Italy, Korea DPR, Switzerland Group B: Austria, Korea Rep, New Zealand, Scotland Group C: Czech Rep, Rep.of Ireland, Thailand, Wales http://www.cypruswomenscup.net/
Wonder if the Korea DPR senior team is as good as the U-20's (hard to say since they were banned in 2015, and finished 5th of 6 teams in AFC Olympics qualifying). They just dominated the USA in the semifinal. Glad Thailand is going. Despite getting walloped by the USA in September you could tell they had good soccer IQ. In the broadcast I believe Foudy said the player pool is less than 50 players. Tough to make progress when that's the case. But taking part in tournaments like this is a step.
They are ranked 9th on the FIFA website. Above Brazil, Norway, Netherlands, China, Spain, Switzerland, Iceland, Italy, and New Zealand. Having said that, I doubt they could beat the senior USWNT.
They seem to reach a premature ceiling as senior players because of the insular nature of North Korea. Their youth players are so impressive because presumably they are trained intensively in academies. But then they plateau because they can't play abroad to keep improving.
not sure but I believe a few of them play in the Japanese League. Last year, right after the WC, they looked very impressive beating Japan, China & S Korea(all WC playoffs) to win something called the East Asian Federation Cup. But then completely bombed at the Olympic Qualifiers. placing out of 5th out of 6. So it's topsy turvy with them. Here they are at the best, beating Japan(which might of been their B team, but plenty of their players have moved to the A squad since). Watch out for their #10, Um Sim-Ra, possibly the best player in all of Asia this Cypress Cup should be very entertaining, while their only ranked a low #25, I still maintain that Austria is the most exciting NT to watch play, they out pace the US & Matildas in terms of 'direct style'(didn't think that's humanly possible!).
