will be interesting to see how the signings work out, Guoan's basically just going down last year's scoring list and trying to sign any of them, though Ramirez, who looked to be the top target, has said publicly he wants to go to Shandong.

Has it been decided for sure that Guangzhou is relegated due to the scandal?

I heard on here a while back that Chongqing was going to fold as opposed to being regulated. Is anything happening about that?

Also, do you guys know any good English websites that would have news on the CSL? I check FIFA.com every once in a while, but that's the only source I have.

I would expect things to be a little more organized than last year when the schedule was released weeks before the season, but I wouldn't expect to see it until february or so.

I think the schedule will be released in early march, as it's reported the new season will start on march 21 & 22

Beijing Guo'an officially confirmed striker Ryan Griffiths will play for the guard for another season.

    and according to smh.com.au

This is Ćiro. The same guy that threatened suicide if Iran lost to Ireland in the WC 2002 qualifiers.

Jets not willing to relent in Griffiths saga
    Posted December 11, 2009 17:47:00

Newcastle Jets is refusing to budge in its transfer row involving former favourite son Joel Griffiths.

The A-League club is desperate to secure a loan deal or transfer fee for the 2008 Johnny Warren medallist after he revealed a desire to stay with Chinese club Beijing Guoan, where he has been on loan since February.

But the two clubs have been at loggerheads agreeing to a price for the 2007/08 A-League golden boot winner, who is scheduled to return to Newcastle on January 1, having recently renewed his deal with the Jets for a further three seasons.

The 30-year-old believes staying in China will give him a better chance of making the Socceroos squad for next year's World Cup.

Jets chief executive John Tsatsimas says the ball is in the Chinese club's court.

"We do have a contract that's binding with Newcastle to Joel and unless certain requirements are met that contract will remain in force," Tsatsimas said.

"Things happen at a very quick pace but at the time of speaking and as I sit here with you now that's what the club's position is and we await to see what the next move is.

"We're certainly not going to allow the player to go on a free.

"We've gone more than halfway in terms of allowing him to fulfil his desires.

"There comes a time when you draw the line in the sand and at the end of the day we still have a contract, he's still a contracted player to the club."

Tsatsimas says while Jets chairman Con Constantine has dropped his reported $1 million price tag for Griffiths, the club still had a six-figure sum in mind for their former leading light.

"In terms of what a fair price is, anyone knows," Tsatsimas said.

"Con has a position in terms of the $350,000 mark as a value at this point in time.

"Certainly (it is) way below what he initially asked for and just goes to show it's not just about money when it comes to Con."

If a deal cannot be struck and Griffiths is forced to return, it is unlikely he will retain the same golden boy status he enjoyed before his departure.

"It's in Beijing's court. We've been playing ducks and drakes and I think everyone's had enough," Tsatsimas said.

"We've had enough, the fans have had enough. The Joel staying or going question has become a bit mundane for the club and for the player I would assume.

"If his desire's not to be here then we've got to work with it. There comes a point where the club says no more and this is our position."

Chengdu striker Santalab: Fury told me to go!
    02.12.09 | tribalfootball.com

Australian striker Brendon Santalab can’t wait to get back to China for pre-season in early January with his Chengdu Blades teammates.

The former Sydney FC striker, who joined North Queensland Fury in the Australian pre-season but left before playing a game, had a brilliant debut season in the Chinese Super League and loved his time with the Blades.

Santalab told tribalfootball .com: “After such a great run of games with the Blades where I scored nine goals, everyone at the club is buzzing with me.

“I got along really well with my teammates and was their favourite foreigner. The reason is apart from my good form is that being Australian we are pretty laid back and take things in our stride whereas some of the other foreigners, especially some from South America, find it harder to adjust and this seems to annoy the Chinese players and club officials.

“I really enjoyed my season at the Blades after joining them half-way through their season. I made an immediate impact scoring so many goals.

“The club Chengdu Blades is actually a really great club and they have a close relationship to Sheffield United in England so they seem to have taken some of the better points from the English club and built that into their structure and culture.”

Santalab wanted to set the record straight on exactly what happened with the situation involving the Fury, saying he was told to find a new deal if possible.

“People ask me why I walked out on North Queensland Fury,” he added.

“Well I didn’t walk out, I was pretty well told by the coaching staff that I was not in their plans and if I had opportunity to find another deal somewhere else that they would not stand in my way.

“I have been around football long enough to know when the writing is on the wall. They didn’t think I could do a job for them and that sits fine with me.

“I appreciated their honesty and at least it allowed me to go off and find a career elsewhere. The fact that it turned out so well with Chengdu Blades is fantastic. I really owe the Fury as it has turned out to be a pivotal moment in my career to date.”

In regards to his playing future, Santalab said he was still unsure, but revealed he would one day love to play in Australia again.

“I am not sure what the future holds but I do have another season on my contract and my agent (Lou Sticca) has been in talks with Chengdu already about an extension,” Santalab said.

“But I do think at some point, I will definitely be back in Australia to play so that will be something to look forward to. At 27 I am still learning the game and want to test myself and push on as far as my career can take me!”

A-League exit likely as Asian clubs hunt Kiwi striker SmeltzMICHAEL COCKERILL
    December 11, 2009

GOLDEN BOOT Shane Smeltz seems certain to depart the A-League during next month's transfer window, with Chinese side Shandong Luneng among a host of suitors for the prolific New Zealand international.

Smeltz, 28, has a $300,000 buy-out clause in his contract with Gold Coast United and is believed to be ready to exercise it after the All Whites' recent qualification for the World Cup.

He joined Gold Coast from Wellington Phoenix on a three-year deal at the start of the season, but has already come close to leaving the club twice - initially to Turkish strugglers Hacettepe SK and more recently to Qatari side Al Rayyan.

Both moves fell through at the last moment but, mindful of making sure he is in tip-top shape for the World Cup, it's believed Smeltz is determined to make it third-time lucky.

Both Shandong Luneng and Japanese side JEF United Chiba have tracked Smeltz in the past month, but the interest from the Chinese side - who have qualified for next year's Asian Champions League - now hinges on the recent change of coach. Croatian Branko Ivankovic - a former national coach of Iran - took charge this week and is considering his choices for the Asian slot under the 3+1 rule. Although a New Zealand international, Smeltz qualifies as an AFC player because he was raised on the Gold Coast and holds an Australian passport.

Smeltz could also make a move to a Scandinavian league, where the transfer window remains open until March - a preferred option for Gold Coast because it would allow their top-scorer to see out the season.

Asked the possibility of an impending move, Smeltz's agent, Leo Karis, was coy yesterday, saying: ''He's contracted to Gold Coast for another two-and-a-half years, but it's the nature of football that players move from time to time.''

To soften the likely blow of losing Smeltz, Gold Coast have agreed to terms with veteran Scottish playmaker Charlie Miller - who is still waiting to be cleared after his sudden departure from Brisbane Roar - while utility Adam Griffiths could also make a surprise return to Skilled Park after this week cutting his ties with Saudi Arabian pacesetters Al Shabab.

Griffiths played the first game of the season for Gold Coast following an off-season move from Newcastle Jets, but then accepted the offer of a one-year loan from Al Shabab. After playing four out of the first seven games of the season, Arabic papers last night reported Griffiths has been released and under the terms of the original deal Gold Coast have first call on his services.

In other transfer news, Sydney FC are believed to have withdrawn their offer of a new contract to Simon Colosimo, who is hoping to sort out a transfer to Asia - possibly China - during next month's window. Colosimo, who hasn't given up hope of a Socceroos recall in time for the World Cup, also has a firm offer from Melbourne's new A-League team, the Hearts, to consider.

Meanwhile, English lower league goal machine Neil Harris could replace Daniel McBreen at North Queensland Fury next season. McBreen this week announced he would be leaving Townsville to accept a two-year deal with Central Coast Mariners - leaving North Queensland searching for a new target man to play alongside marquee star Robbie Fowler.

Harris, 32, has signalled an interest in playing in the A-League next season after a long career in England's lower reaches - most notably with Millwall, where earlier this year he surpassed Teddy Sheringham to become the Lions' all-time leading goalscorer.

They've already dropped the price a ton, why don't Guoan just sign him? For continuity's sake, it makes sense to have him on the roster. He isn't that great and I still hope they go after a real striker (like Ramirez, Otto, or Guinee) with their plan to go down the list of last year's top scorers to find their next striker. Unlike Griffiths, those guys have size and physicality to overpower most CSL defenders. Though still pretty upset about Ramirez dissing Guoan and offering a big "come and get me" to Shandong.

Wang Xiaolong could be moving to guo'an anytime soon

Shandong is chasing Du Wei and Hao Junmin, if they sign the last one plus the NZ striker the team could have a good chance next year but need a real defender.

With Guangzhou's fate still up in the air, 8 players, including Xu Liang and Lu Lin have been put on the transfer list. Will really be interesting to see what the CSL decision will be, if it is indeed relegation as all the rumors say it is, will it just be a 15 team league or will they bring up another side (or keep one of last season's relegated sides in the CSL)?

That's a little amateurish to release the fixtures only a couple of weeks before the start of the season.

Then again, maybe they want to avoid a repeat of 2007 when Shenhua "merged" with Shanghai United just days before the season started, and the league had to play with 15 teams...

I would hope they don't delay it that long. I understand wanting to wait for the ACL fixtures list to be released, but that should be out fairly soon (if it isn't already) and then after that, there's not much reason to delay it. I thought in part the delay this year was due to waiting to announce sponsorship. Hopefully the schedule can be released before March though at the same time, not many people care.
