It might not be a big hit. The game yesterday had a lot of sales. If most of those people come to another game, then that's more parking and concessions down the road. I'd imagine the concessions profits more than cover game day labor costs. Are they still doing fireworks today? Is it rescheduled for another time?
If there was still lightning in the area at that point, then you postpone. No trouble with that. But you don't just because there was lightning a hour ago. If you postponed any game just because there was lightning in Columbus on that day, we'd not get that many games played in the summer. The weather is very changeable around here. That's midwestern weather.
Disney does, but they use ones with colored smoke trailers rather than sparks. Sounds odd but it works. I don't expect to see that here, of course.
There are daytime fireworks and there are nighttime fireworks. I don't imagine that the fireworks company brought a combination of both just in case the game was delayed. That said, there are only three home games in July and only one of which is a weekend game. My guess is that hold it to July 19.
One additional thought that I had at the game last night, was that if the lightening ends, the teams still have to wait (half hour?). Then they would start warming up, which would be another half hour. That said, Jym Ganahal better use some of that meteorologist magic for this afternoon!
The first question should be "who actually is in charge?" That's just it. It wasn't the weather. You could see clear skies above Crew Stadium while we were just waiting and standing around.
http://www.thecrew.com/match/columbus-crew-vs-fc-dallas-june-28-2014 Gates 4 & 5 are open (south end), while Gates 6 & 7 are closed. No supporters march in Gate 7. Gate 5 Ticket Booth and Will Call are open, and the Gate 4 Ticket Booth is open for customer service issues. East Plaza Grill Stand and Main Lower Concession Stands will be operational. The stage and Stadium Club tent are closed today. Parking is free today and VIP & B Lot Passes from June 28 will be honored. Red, White and Crew Post-Match Fireworks presented by Scioto Downs will be rescheduled at a later date.
So I'm still ticked off, since this is pretty much the first Crew home game since 2007 that I'm going to miss. ******** this situation. I hate Crew fans that don't go to Crew games. So I guess I hate myself today. So it's bad form to go ahead with the game 2 hours after someone is hurt, but it's not bad form to go ahead with the game 12 hours later? I guess I'm a numbnuts because no, I cannot figure that out. How is it not okay 2 hours later, but then okay 12 hours later? So then anytime there's lightning anywhere in the area, the game is cancelled for the rest of the night, no matter how good the weather gets? ******** that policy, that's going to suck going forward. Don't worry, the Crew will take care of jamming stuff up our asses.
I think it's unfair to say that just because there are some of us questioning that the game being cancelled that we're unsympathetic to the seriousness of the injury to the fan. Clearly I don't want anyone to get hurt, and I will be checking for updates and hoping the fan recovers and is safe. I'm just unsure of the thought process where we had a game cancelled for what was essentially the exact same conditions we've dealt with on delays numerous times before. Of course we don't know the full situation I'm sure and it's not an easy problem for The Crew FO to have to deal with so I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Luckily although I'm not free to get to the game today I'll be able to watch the stream on MLSLive.
I would say a policy of not playing with lightning in the area in the immediate aftermath of a lightning strike sounds pretty reasonable. If you don't, well... I guess we just have different priorities in life.
I do feel bad for The Crew in all of this also, we had a near sellout last night, along with tons of families and youth soccer players from out of town. They were expecting to play their championship games on the field today, and now all of that has been canceled. Lots of families spent a lot of money and time to get to the game. Hopefully none of them will blame nature for not having a good experience, but it was a good chance to grab some new fans and we don't get crowds like that often.
I'm not free, so I won't be able to watch this game until after 6 tonight. So all you people who are better than me can feel free to insult me all you want, I won't be able to respond before this thread is presumably locked. Unless there's any rain in the air today. In which case the game should probably be called off for the rest of the day.
Okay, I'll bite: what lightning in the area? You noticed the part about how after we waited the standard 30 minutes, the skies were clearing, right?
If I go to the game, I need to decide in the next 30 minutes. I'm torn between watching World Cup soccer in the comfort of my home while having time to do things I planned to do today and going to a sauna to watch a team that's systematically killing my fandom...and I can't even pull an at-home triple header because the stupid TV deal prevents me from [legally] watching the game.
Just logged onto MLS Live. It appears the blackout has been lifted for this match. I just moved to Grove City this weekend, and I'm watching with no tunnelbear.
