My Uncle Dave was a ball turret gunner on a B-24. Seven missions over Ploesti (they counted double, and for good reason). On the eighth, his plane did not come back (though he'd already completed his missions). He was in the 343 Bomb Squadron, 98th Bomb Group. As you may have guessed, his squadron was known as "The Snow White Squadron". He also flew at least one mission with Lt. Donald Puckett, CMOH. Unfortunately, I found out most of this after he passed.
Sad and amazing. Those guy were so damn brave. My great uncle was on a bomber crew in the Pacific. Flew one mission before he was shot down. Fortunately, he survived and lived a long, happy life. Here's grandpa with his plane: He was the coolest.
Sweet! DnD is AFK. I may advance to the quarters with a forfeit! My actual sheep don't stand a chance in an actual matchup.
Looks like he did a lot of low-level work from his "kill" markings. That was pretty dangerous stuff...
CAS would always seem like the most satisfying type of missions however, assuming you returned. My grandfather was a Chief Mechanic for a B-24 (Sakhappy). Named that way apparently for the fact that much of the crew would take long naps as they flew to the target and back if possible. 8th AF, 2nd AD, 489th BG, 845th SQ. Ploesti, was he one of the sorties for Black Sunday?
No--he flew out of Lecce, Italy from about April 1944 to August 1944. Black Sunday was out of Africa (same squadron, but 9th AF) in 1943. There's a gal whose gone into the National Archives and copied a lot of the mission reports for the 98th BG, so I've been able to read about some of his missions.... Here's the first page of the 1 Aug 1943 Mission (my uncle was still in the States for this)...
