MLS Regular Season Match Columbus Crew FC at D.C. United Saturday, March 18 07:00 PM RFK Stadium, Washington, D.C. TV: CW Columbus / Spectrum Sports / BCSN2 (Spectrum 311/1311, AT&T 005/1005, WOW! 005/205, DirecTV 053/902, Dish 053/7205, Antenna 53.1)
I was originally going to post something about "rivalry" here but then thought those years are long gone and nobody cares anymore and nobody posts the .gif of the guy walking up then peeing on the DC "scum" logo. So I didn't. Then I was going to create a new post for "rivarly rankings" but decided not to and came back here. Do we even have a rival anymore? I took the list of teams from the Wikipedia page for MLS and ranked them on "rivalry" level. Of course this is subjective and mostly a pre-drinking pre-Crew pre-Blue Jackets cold-Saturday from the comfort of my loft thing so take it as is. D.C. United - early history with DC success, Etchyhairy, bad call Hall, Bruce Arena, etc. Hatfield vs McCoy why are we even doing this? Chicago Fire - Open Cup failures but defeating Bake and Busch on the way to MLS cup is legend Portland Timbers - butthurt from MLS cup defeat Toronto FC - manufactured rivalry via Tribble Cup but always fun to win against them, plus memories of first match and dealing with annoying canadians asking why our stadium wasn't full and now, plus inherited laughing at Maple Leafs via Jackets Seattle Sounders FC - Sigi LA Galaxy - post would be too long, too many reasons New England Revolution - Heaps hate. Shalrie anger. Kei. Montreal Impact - Dogbra New York Red Bulls - inherited cabbie hate FC Dallas - Hunt Sports Group infighting, Burn memories Houston Dynamo - can't remember at the moment Sporting Kansas City - Kei? Colorado Rapids - Real Salt Lake - dreadlocks ... San Jose Earthquakes - Orlando City SC - too new (16 - 21) Philadelphia Union Vancouver Whitecaps FC New York City FC Atlanta United FC Minnesota United FC
I'd put RSL ahead of the Rapids: Real Salt Lake - dreadlocks ... MLS Playoffs 2009, GBS benching and subsequent heartbreak after winning the Supporters' Shield. THEN they beat us 2010-2011 Concacaf Champion's League quarterfinal 4-1. Ugh. Colorado Rapids - MLS Cup Playoffs 2010...making it two years in a row we lose to a western conference team in the eastern conference bracket. ugh. A gritty match on the second leg that sees 5 Columbus players get yellow cards then a heartbreaker of a goal from Connor Casey in the 84'. We lose the series on a skied PK by Carrol. This is the last match before the purge.
The game this week are really going to help sort out who are the good or bad teams or just lucky or unlucky. Seattle v Red Bulls. Should be interesting. Colorado defend first, second and third v Minnesota. And of course this game DC have 0 goals this year. 4 against in a pretty sieve-like manner. Probably without Mensah but I am not sure that really matters . . . Not sure who starts between Crognale, Abubukar and Williams but hey it might be Tchani. Who is really the bottom dweller of the East this year? We shall see.
Since Mensahs out, im assuming Gregg slots Williams in. I would much rather see Crognale or Abubakar get that chance though. I would love it if one or both of them can rise to the occasion this year and we can go forward in the future with out DP center backs for a while.
I'll always hate DC more than any other team. My second most hated team is whatever team Bob Bradley happens to be coaching if he's in the league. That comes out of his early 2000's in Chicago, followed by the Metrostars. What an asshole. Caleb Porter levels of asshole. DC hasn't scored yet this season. After DC we have Portland at home. We face a winless March if we don't find a way to get 3 points here.
I'd hope that we decided against appealing the Jonathan red decision, for a couple of reasons. 1. Last season, our appeals were successful because the decisions were almost comically incorrect. In this case, however, I'm not at all certain that Penso has made a clear and obvious mistake. 2. If it were me, I would keep the powder dry simply because we know how many bad decisions we got last season, and we also have healthy, available bodies behind Mensah that can slot right in on Saturday. I'd feel compelled to use an appeal at a later juncture in the season, if the suspension would leave us scrambling to fill the position due to possible injuries, international callups, etc. For these reasons, I feel like it is kind of a wasted appeal, even if successful.
I agree. Let him sit it out. There is certainly an argument to be made that Mensah lost his footing when trying to make a cut and that lead to the very awkward tackle. But, the risk of losing appeals for the remainder of the season is too high a price to pay. It was dangerous, I don't think there was intent (I don't even think there was an intent to make a tackle) but he was a bit out of control.
Prediction...Crew keep playing out of the back...DC pressure....turnover leads to first DC goal of the year. Prediction...Pipa turns the ball over 6 times in the first half by passing directly to a DC player.
I just watched the Dynamo highlights again. Big man Mensah is standing around in the box close to Torres on his goal and again for the Dynamo's chance in the 83'. This guy is terrible. Spinning ballerina in game 1 and a statue with a red card in game 2. He deserves to sit for more reasons than his red card. Two games in and the guy is already a bust. Put a fork in this team, they're done.
I have participated in some of the criticism in the various threads this week after the loss at Houston. I think many well reasoned critiques have been made about Berhalter's acquisitions, roster, player management, and system. Many of these points illustrate why I think this is the best place for in-depth Crew discussion. However, I gather we're boiling over now to a bit of hyperbole. Egad.
Great news everybody: I'll be at the 24-hour sci-fi movie marathon down in Columbus this weekend, which means I won't have to watch the Crew this week!
I couldn't hear that. It sounded a bit muddled. Can you restart that one, with a capo leading the song? Thanks!
Complete agreement. The biggest problem facing the team in 2017 is an annoying lack of blind obedience and conformity among the supporters.
