I hope it's not the typical Latin American carelessness and disregard for regulations that caused this shit.

And if it is, that authorities clamp down on it.

The story I saw last night that indicated that Campeonato Serie A teams would offer to loan players to Chapecoense also said that all the teams in the Serie A had collectively asked the CBF to exempt Chapecoense from relegation for three years, to give them a chance to rebuild a team.

No word yet (that I've seen) on what the CBF plans to do with this request, or what CONMEBOL intends re: the Copa.

Judging by the track the plane took and the fact that the plane didn't explode on impact leads me to think that the best theory I've heard is that the navigation instruments died and the pilots had to find the runway the old-fashioned way - by searching out their window. One could only imagine what a panic that would have been to search for a runway somewhere in the mountains at night (I'm not sure if it was also cloudy or raining).

Sadly they couldn't find it and eventually run out of gas. :(

This contradicts other news articles I've read, which have said any of these:

    1. that a different plane got priority to land because of a low fuel issue, that other planes (including theirs) were consequently put in a holding pattern, and that after being in the hold for a while, their pilot declared a fuel emergency of their own;

    2. that they declared an electrical problem, landing was expected to be dangerous, and they went into an orbit to dump/burn fuel prior to attempting to land (most planes in trouble will try to land on as little fuel as possible to minimize the fire risk from a hard landing).

The truth is, we're just going to have to wait.

That theory #2 doesn't add-up to me. Santa Cruz to Medellin is already pushing-it for this type of plane. So there doesn't seem to be any logical reason for dumping fuel.

I hope its not #1 because that would just point to sheer incompetence at an unprecedented scale.

Of course with most aircraft accidents its not only some big thing that goes wrong, but a combination of that big thing along with many little things that didn't go your way. If it was day-time, they probably land the plane safely. If they were flying over flat land, they probably land the plane safely. If their flight route was shorter, they probably land the plane safely.

Not really. It was at the limit of the specified range; but specified range is based on fuel minus reserve.

Yeah, I read something similar to this.

They had an electrical problem and the pilot expected a rough landing so he dumped most of the fuel. When he was going to land, the airport people told him he had to wait because there was another airplane (from a Venezuelan airliner) that was also in an emergency and had to land before him.

The guy began to orbit around waiting for his turn and ran completely out of fuel.

Follow-up: no word on the CBF response to these as yet, but their behavior isn't encouraging. Apparently the CBF is demanding that Chapecoense play their next league match against Atletico Mineiro. The president of the CBF says that Chapeco can just use their youth players and everything will be fine.

This week, Brazilian Football Association president Marco Polo Del Nero caused controversy when he insisted that Chapecoense play their next league game against Atlético Mineiro.

“This game has to happen. There has to be a big party,” Chapecoense’s surviving vice-president Ivan Tozzo told Globoesporte. When Tozzo said he had no players, Del Nero replied: “You have the youth team and the players who stayed.”

Atlético have refused to play the game. “We believe in sport, respect the pain, this is not the moment to demand anything of any player,” Daniel Nepomuceno, Atlético’s president told reporters on 1 December.

Play the game and give the proceeds to the victims' families. Same with the Cup Final if they can squeeze it in after Japan.

It should come down to what the victims' families decide, have they even asked them

Than the agent should have not let them take off. So simple as that.
