This was a big match as it determined a spot in the 2014 Copa Libertadores. Fortunately the better team won so Argentina should be better represented in the CL.

It's strange how a team like River Plate, which has so much success in its country's league, has struggled so much in South American cup competitions.

Five years and counting they haven't won anything domestically (except promotion back from Primera B).

Ponte Preta in the semis... even though they're likely to get relegated this year.

    Brazil reaffirms its advantage.

Heroic Ponte Preta! A humble team from the city of Campinas ousts the "super-champion" of the 2013 Argentine league season, a team which won 5 domestic titles in the past 8 years.

Vélez Sarsfield was a worthy opponent. I even chose
Vélez to advance in the "mas sabio" thread. Alas, Ponte proved me wrong.

Why? Is their stadium a complete dump?

It is old but far from a complete dump. Conembol had no objections until sao Paulo started complaining about the "safety" of there fans. Conembol have a rule that a stadium must hold 20k for a big match and they are saying the Majestico holds less than that even though the local fire department put it over 25k during a recent inspection. I'm a Santos fan but it is pretty much politics and a big club throwing around there weight. Karma's a bitch though!!!!!

A relegated team winning the competition won't help its prestige. Hope Lanus can manage to win it.

It was also close to happening in 2010, when an already-relegated Goias almost managed to beat a disastrous Independiente in the final.

Yes, and if the Sudamericana had the away goals rule for the final, Goias would have won. A very close shave.
