    Copa Sudamericana 2010 [R]

Half hour ago they completed the draw.

Did anybody understand anything? It looks similar to last year but they somehow found a way to complicate it. It seems the champion earns a spot on next year's Libertadores but the winner of the Libertadores won't?

The draws get worse every year...

    Re: Copa Sudamericana 2010 [R]

Hahahaha... Yeah it is amazing how much they tinker with the format to make it more complicated.....

Apparently seeds number 2 and 3 from each country play the first round which could be anybody but Brazil or Argentina, because they play their own qualifier round...

In the next round, teams seeded as number 1 play the winners from the first round.

Then the winners of this round advance to round of 16 where they join winners from Argentina/Brazil zone...

Then in QFs the defending champ joins in...

    Then is SF.... WTF?

This thing is a joke.... Why don't they make it simpler? Simple is better...

And give Brazil and Argentina 4 spots.. maximum....

    8x3 = 24
    2x4 = 32

The country with the worst performance in the previous year loses one spot, that goes to the defending champ.

32 teams, home and away games from the start.. done!!!!

You want to make it cheaper? Arrange the matches by bordering countries in the first two phases as much as possible...

    Re: Copa Sudamericana 2010 [R]

    Well here's the draw.

    First Round

    A- Bolivia 3 vs. Chile 2
    B- Guaraní vs. Uruguay 2
C- CD Universidad César Vallejo vs. Ecuador 2
D- CD Atlético Huila vs. Venezuela 2
E- Chile 3 vs. CD Oriente Petrolero
    F- Uruguay 3 vs. Olimpia
G- Ecuador 3 vs. CD Universidad San Martín
H- Venezuela 3 vs. Santa Fe CD

    Second Round

O1- Winner D vs. CD San José
    O2- Argentina 5 vs. Argentina 2
    O3- Winner C vs. Uruguay 1
O4- EC Vitória vs. SE Palmeiras
O5- Winner H vs. Caracas FC
O6- Santos FC vs. Avaí FC
O7- Winner E vs. Deportes Tolima
O8- LDU Quito -> Directly to the Round of 16
O9- Winner B vs. CD Unión San Felipe
    O10- Argentina 6 vs. Argentina 1
    O11- Winner G vs. Ecuador 1
O12- Grêmio Prudente vs. CA Mineiro
O13- Winner A vs. Cerro Porteño
O14- Goiás EC vs. Grêmio FBPA
O15- Winner F vs. Sport Huancayo
    O16- Argentina 4 vs. Argentina 3

Teams listed on the right play the second leg at home.

    Round of 16

    C1- Winner O1 vs. Winner O16
    C2- Winner O2 vs. Winner O15
    C3- Winner O3 vs. Winner O14
    C4- Winner O4 vs. Winner O13
    C5- Winner O5 vs. Winner O12
    C6- Winner O6 vs. Winner O11
    C7- Winner O7 vs. Winner O10
C8- LDU Quito vs. Winner O9

The higher O plays its second leg match at home as it advances. For example O1 will always play their second leg match at home, O16 will always play the first leg match at home.

    Qualified teams(22)

    Champion: LDU Quito
    Bolivia 1: CD San José
    Bolivia 2: CD Oriente Petrolero
    Brazil 1: SE Palmeiras
    Brazil 2: Avaí FC
    Brazil 3: CA Mineiro
    Brazil 4: Grêmio FBPA
    Brazil 5: Goiás EC
    Brazil 6: Grêmio Prudente
    Brazil 7: Santos FC
    Brazil 8: EC Vitória
Chile 1: CD Unión San Felipe
    Colombia 1: Deportes Tolima
    Colombia 2: Santa Fe CD
    Colombia 3: CD Atlético Huila
    Paraguay 1: Cerro Porteño
    Paraguay 2: Olimpia
    Paraguay 3: Guaraní
    Peru 1: Sport Huancayo
Peru 2: CD Universidad San Martín
Peru 3: CD Universidad César Vallejo
    Venezuela 1: Caracas FC

    Pending qualifying(17)

    -Argentina 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6
    -Bolivia 3
    -Chile 2 & 3
    -Ecuador 1, 2 & 3
    -Uruguay 1, 2 & 3
    -Venezuela 2 & 3

Looks a bit more complicated at first, mainly because of the missing teams. Though i think there's a lot of space for improvement.

P.S.: Boca and River are unlikely to qualify this year.

Next time these fuckers better come up with some kind of equation or at least a freaking diagram because this shit makes no sense at all.

It is so strange seeing a team like Union San Felipe in there. That's what happens when the big teams ignore Copa Chile.

Indeed, looking at the 22 that qualified, some teams are somewhat unknown.

The crazy thing is that San Felipe was still in 2nd Division when they qualified for Sudamericana.

And Municipal Iquique (last year in 1rst division, and now in the 2nd div) has a 50% of probabs. to qualifie to the Sudamericana as "Chile3".

BTW, ¿wtf is Gremio Prudente?¿are they "gaúchos" like Gremio?

Invitaron algun equipo braca o argie? OTRA RIDICULEZ SIN fundamentos losgicos

No, they're from the State of São Paulo.

It used to be Grêmio Barueri, but they've moved to the city of Presidente Prudente and now is Grêmio Prudente. It's owned by businessmen looking for money.

But that's another "adventage" of having two cups played at different times.

In top of that to that all countries don't have the same schedule for their seasons, 7 use the calendar year and other 3 don't, leaving aside format which wouldn't matter.

I don't like that. Qualification for Lib should be strictly through league results, IMO. This kinda complicates things.

Plus, Argentine teams can qualify for both continental tournaments the same year. Too much fixture congestion.

    Re: Copa Sudamericana 2010 [R]

Though in reality that doesn't have to do with using or not league formats, it's because AFA decided to do so(Interestingly pushed by River and Boca, note how none qualified to the tournaments this year) and CONMEBOL doesn't say a word. But in the long run the Sudamericana should be parallel or dissappear altogether.

Stupid question perhaps, but is this the S-American equivalent of the UEFA Cup?

    I agree.

So now they're gonna take a Group Stage slot and move it to the preliminary round to accommodate the new Copa Sud champion's berth. I wonder which country will lose its Group Stage berth.

    Re: Copa Sudamericana 2010 [R]

Technically yes, though it has many flaws, the true counterpart of the UEFA Cup was the now discontinued Copa CONMEBOL, which instead of being fixed was removed altogether.

The winner of this cup plays the winner of Libertadores in the "Recopa Sudamericana" which is the equivalent of the UEFA Super Cup, and also another cup called "Suruga Cup" which is played in Japan against Japan League Cup winner.
